In the events of Mortal Kombat 9, Shao Kahn launched an invasion on Earthrealm in an attempt to forcibly merge it with Outworld. He was destroyed by the Elder Gods for violating the rules of Mortal Kombat. Earthrealm was saved, but many of its champions died in its defense. To make matters worse, Quan Chi managed to collect the souls of those fallen warriors and add them to the ranks of the Netherrealm army as revanents, all for the purpose of allowing his master, the fallen Elder God Shinnok, to escape his imprisonment in the Netherrealm and resume his war against the Elder Gods, starting on Earthrealm...
