Drunk IS nature!

After Orel receives a punishment where he promises never to 'do that, with those, in there, for that long, ever again', he looks around his father's study at the stuffed animals. Clay decides to take Orel hunting, even letting him hold Ol' Gunny, a pistol that had been passed down from Puppington to Puppington (and then Clay quickly takes it away). They go to the Moralton Nature Reserve, where Orel sees a blue bird, but the trip quickly goes downhill as Clay's drinking is getting out of hand and Orel has trouble with the idea of shooting an animal. Clay ends up killing someone's hunting dog and eats it while gloating about it, while Orel is concerned with how drunk Clay is getting. Clay ends up breaking down about how much he hates himself, before going on a rant about women and children. An increasingly terrified Orel accidentally fires off his pistol, and he's heard calling out "Dad!" in shock before the episode ends on a Cliffhanger.

Tropes present:

  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Clay shoots and kills the deer that was nice to Orel simply to rub it in his face. To make matters worse, he kills a bystander's hunting dog and later eats it.
Clay: I win and YOU lose!
  • Despair Speech: Clay goes on a drunken rant about how much he hates his life at the end of the episode.
  • Evil Is Petty: Clay doesn't give Orel any of his food because he didn't kill it.
  • From Bad to Worse: What was supposed to be a funny father and son hunting trip quickly turns into nightmare as Clay’s sanity literally falls apart because of his alcoholism, resulting into a maddening rant that frightened Orel so much that the latter instinctively pulled the trigger.
  • In Vino Veritas: The more Clay drinks, the more he reveals how utterly depraved and miserable he is.
  • Mood Whiplash: The episode starts in a humorous manner, but as Clay gets drunk, it suddenly becomes dramatic, ending in a cliffhanger.
  • Noodle Incident: The episode begins with Clay lecturing and punishing Orel about something the latter did, but it is never explained what exactly (until Season 3).
  • A Real Man Is a Killer: Clay has this opinion and decides to bring Orel into a hunting trip. But Orel’s reluctance at killing animals makes Clay even more frustrated and he starts drinking.
  • Rule of Symbolism: During Clay's rant, not only are flies buzzing around him, but his face is tinted red by the glow of the campfire.
