Recap / Monsters at Work S2E1 "A Monstrous Homecoming"

Go To

Tylor Tuskmon has now settled into his role as a Jokester at Monsters, Inc.—or so he thought. As he's struggling to find a way to make kids laugh, a return to Monsters University turns out not to be the homecoming he's hoping for. Meanwhile, Mike's stuck on hold as he tries to confront a major news show about the bad press the company's getting.

This episode can be viewed on Disney Channel's YouTube channel over here.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Jill at I Scream, U Scream calls Mike Wazowski "Mike Weirdzowski", which Mike takes offence to.
  • Ambiguously Related: Jack and Jill, the hosts of I Scream, U Scream, argue Like an Old Married Couple and mention going to counselling, but are revealed to share a single body, seemingly making them conjoined twins.
  • Bird-Poop Gag: One of the monster pigeons dumps on Duncan, just as he says that Tylor's humiliation is "a gift from above."
  • Brick Joke:
    • Tylor's dad tells a rather cringy joke about sea monsters. When trying to save face at the MU homecoming, Tylor tries that same joke. It lands flat, even with his dad.
    • Mike Wazowski is called "Mike Weirdzowski" at I Scream, U Scream. When Mike calls the news show to complain and, when he eventually gets a real monster instead of a recorded message to answer, he has to identify himself as Weirdzowski instead of Wazowski for the other monster to know who he is.
  • Broken Base: In-Universe, the idea of Monsters, Inc. switching to laugh power is proving a divisive subject. While some monsters are onboard with the idea, most are staunch traditionalists and see laugh power as a joke. Naturally, Mike takes that idea quite offensively.
  • Close Up On Head: I Scream, U Scream hosts Jack and Jill are revealed to share one body when the camera pulls back.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Sulley's desk has the picture Boo drew for him in the first movie. Since this takes place after the Time Skip seen at the end of the film, he's been happily reunited with her.
    • Amongst the prior scare kings include Frank "Frightening" McCay and Earl "The Terror" Thompson, who were both featured in Monsters University.
    • Mike is not pleased to see Johnny Worthington III on TV again, and tries to smugly claim they beat him in the Scare Games. Sulley reminds Mike that they cheated and got expelled for it.
    • Speaking of Johnny, Claire Wheeler (the co-host of the Scare Games) returns as his wife.
  • Epic Fail: Tylor's return to MU goes rather poorly, to say the least, as he makes a big fool of himself in front of thousands, much to Mike and Sulley's horror (and Duncan's delight).
  • Everyone Has Standards: Jack, one of the hosts of I Scream, U Scream, says this when discussing Waternoose's plot to use the Scream Extractor on human children.
"We may be monsters, but we're not monsters."
  • Eye Scream: Tylor gets donut jelly in his eye, which causes him to scream in pain. This unfortunately scares the kid he was trying to make laugh.
  • Foreshadowing: Tylor accidentally fills up the rest of his canister with scream power, mixing it in with the laughter. Then it starts to create a dark, goopy substance...
  • Never My Fault: Played for Laughs. Mike refuses to acknowledge that he and Sulley cheated against Johnny at the Scare Games (though the reality is, only Sulley cheated that day).
  • Overly Long Gag: Mike spends the entire episode on hold at the news company.
  • The Worst Seat in the House: Fritz, Cutter and Duncan are seated on the back row of MU Stadium, but at least have a good view of the field... until a large Blob Monster seats in front of them and blocks their view.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: After spending all day on hold trying to get in touch with the news people, Mike finally gets to someone, but is rejected due to it being outside normal business hours.
