Recap / Monsters at Work S1E2 "Meet MIFT"

Go To

An uneasy Tylor tries to shirk his new found teammates at MIFT. However, an emergency in the Laugh Floor may leave him as the team's last and only hope...

Tropes:

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Millie, as shown in the Cold Opening.
  • Bland-Name Product: 361/2 Hour Energy is presented as a stand in for the real life 5-Hour Energy, as are the half as powerful 181/4 Hour Energy and twice as powerful 73-Hour Energy (the latter two being mentioned only).
  • Brick Joke: During Tylor's Initiation Ceremony, he's asked to screw a nut into a bolt with a wrench, but he screws it up by screwing the nut off the bolt and it rolls into a grate. In the last scene before "Mike's Comedy Class", the same nut lands on Tylor's new desk.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Tylor sees firsthand how much MIFT takes their job seriously when they try to help Mike out of a malfunctioning door.
  • The Cameo: Rosie Levin, the leader of the Eta Hiss Hiss sorority from Monsters University, appears during the scene of Mike giving his comedy class.
  • Chekhov's Skill: During Tylor's initiation ceremony, he's asked to screw a nut into a bolt. The required skill becomes needed later when he and his fellow MIFTers help Mike out of a malfunctioning door.
  • Credits Gag: The end of the credits has Val congratulating the viewers for making it through the credits. The lines are at the bottom of this page.
  • Credits Jukebox: The end credits use a slight variation of the Monsters, Inc. theme.
  • Door Dumb: Tylor shouts at the MIFT team about how ridiculous they are, even as he pulls repeatedly at a door trying to get out of their office, before being told to push.
  • Filler: The episode ends with a segment called "Mike's Comedy Class", with Mike singing a song about the dangers of comedy.
  • Initiation Ceremony: A humorous variation is held to Tylor's chagrin.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: Fritz attempts to be cheeky by "mistaking" Tylor's mother for his sister.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Mike was able to fill dozens of laughing canisters all on his own, which is both impressive yet tiring for him.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: When he finds that Tylor left already without getting his soft drink that he was planning on giving him, Fritz says aloud, “Sigh, disappointed.”
  • Second Place Is for Losers: A humorous variation since Mike has the top two spots as a jokester on the laugh floor. Mike, however, is disappointed and irritated when his worst performing workstation placed fourth while Lanky placed third.
  • The Stinger: Val congratulates the viewer for staying through the credits and we get one last "MIFTer" from Fritz.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: The entire MIFT team tends to be rather exuberant to the point of clinginess about Tylor being a member of MIFT, particularly Fritz. It's implied when Banana Bread/Winchester got promoted to Jokester status and left MIFT at the end of the episode that this is because a lot of people have walked out on MIFT for bigger things and it breaks Fritz's heart to see any member of his makeshift family leave.
  • Workaholic: Mike has been producing laugh energy non-stop for 18 hours. While it's understandable since there are constant power outages, it begins to take its toll on him.
