Recap / Monster Rancher S3 E9: Furred Suezo's M-1 Grand Prix Hero

Go To

Upon arriving in Papas, the Searchers learn that the M-1 Grand Prix requires challengers to field three monsters. Aside from Mocchi, the other team members must belong to one of five different qualifying species... and only Suezo and Golem are eligible. While Golem is willing to participate, Suezo isn't so keen on the idea, and skips out on training beforehand in order to wander around the city.

However, he comes across a young Furred Suezo who's being bullied by a pack of Fly Eyes. Sympathizing with his plight, he encourages him to stand up for himself, trying to help him recover what the bullies stole from him. This gets him banged up, which poses a problem when he's got to handle the tie-breaker by himself — and he's up against an enormous Zilla! Will Suezo find the courage to inspire his young fan?

This episode contains examples of:

  • #1 Dime: Furred Suezo's most treasured possession is an autographed card of Poritoka, the only one he tries to hide from the Fly Eyes when they steal his collection. Suezo works to get it back for him, only for the thieves to come after it again.
  • Angrish: Tiger throws a fit over not being able to fight in the M-1 Grand Prix, resorting to childishly sitting by the registration booth screaming this way.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Furred Suezo protests the idea of standing up for himself, saying that he'll just get hurt if he tries, Suezo bluntly calls him pathetic.
  • Commonality Connection: Furred Suezo's childish, crybaby nature and cowardice reminds Suezo a lot of himself when he was his age.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Suezo.
  • Determined Defeatist: Suezo attempts to convince Furred Suezo that there are times where you have to fight, even when you know you're going to lose — that the willingness to fight itself is a form of victory. Furred Suezo doesn't understand the reasoning behind this.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Averted with Tiger; though he clearly intends to put Golem and Suezo through their paces before the tourney, Suezo skipping out means he never gets the chance — the group is too distracted by his absence to accomplish anything.
  • Foreshadowing: The pictures for the five types of monsters eligible to participate in the M-1 Grand Prix include a Cawken to represent the Ducken breed. A Cawken serves as Golem's opponent for his match.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Furred Suezo admires Poritoka for his strength and unbreakable defense. He also winds up admiring Suezo after seeing him in action.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: After pounding Suezo into the ring, Zilla throws him up into the air in order to finish him off. This gives Suezo enough time to find his Heroic Resolve, focus his guts and land a bite attack on Zilla's forehead, turning the tables.
  • Ma'am Shock: Male example; Suezo doesn't take too kindly to Furred Suezo referring to him as 'gramps', eventually taking him aside and explaining how young he actually is.
  • Magic Feather: Implied; after it's stolen, Furred Suezo wistfully muses that if he still had his Poritoka card, it might make him stronger. He eventually realizes that he doesn't actually need it.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Both Suezo and Tiger react this way upon seeing the guidelines for the M-1 Grand Prix, for opposing reasons: Tiger's floored to see that he can't participate, while Suezo's upset because he can.
    • Golem after Cawken knocks him forwards just enough that he accidentally steps out of bounds, losing his match. Coupled with a scream of horror at his mistake.
    • Suezo's response to seeing just who his opponent in the final match is.
  • Tempting Fate: Initially, Suezo rejects the idea of registering to fight at all, and is only willing to agree out of the belief that Mocchi and Golem will be able to handle all the battling themselves while he remains as backup. Naturally, he winds up having to take the stage by the climax.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: This is the only match in the series Suezo wins entirely on his own.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The episode switches back and forth between following Suezo through Papas as he tries to help Furred Suezo and showing how the other Searchers are faring during the M-1 Grand Prix, before tying them back together for the climax when he arrives in time for the final match.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: After the Fly Eyes beat them up and steal his Poritoka card again, Furred Suezo reacts this way to Suezo suggesting that he should feel good for standing up for himself despite losing. This is also his response to learning that Suezo is going to fight in the tourney despite being so wiped out from that loss that he can barely move straight.
