Recap / Monster Rancher S3 E7: Disappearing Hare Line

Go To

A Spot Dino steals Hare's bindle stick; chasing after the thief leads the Searchers right to the doorstep of Fairy Hare, an old friend of his. The two of them, along with Wild Hare, worked as a trio of thieves that stole from Moo and his forces, until one of their targets turned out to be a trap and they got separated from each other.

Now Fairy is running an orphanage, taking care of young children and monsters who lost their families due to the war. But food is running low. When Wild Hare arrives as well, the old gang is reunited, and decides to break into a baddie warehouse in order to take care of the kids. Once again, however, it turns out to be a trap, and the Black Weeds hold the trio hostage, demanding that Holly hand over the Black Disc in exchange for their safety.

After the trade is made, Hare rushes to get the disc back, only for Wild to reveal that he was working for the baddies all along. He attempts to hold Fairy hostage, but she escapes his grasp, and the rest of the Searchers pursue the Black Weeds while Hare and Fairy face off against their old friend, who brags that this isn't the first time he betrayed them. He was responsible for the ambush that separated them in the first place, having decided to defect to Moo's side out of jealousy over their perceived relationship.

Hare headbutts Wild's crest, cracking it. Fairy begs the two to stop fighting, insisting that their former camaraderie couldn't all have been a lie. Wild insists that it's far too late for him to find redemption, but Hare rejects that, breaking his emblem off entirely by crushing it in his paw. Genki and the others successfully recover the Black Disc from the baddies, and Wild remains with Fairy to help her with running the orphanage while Hare and the others continue their travels.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Ambiguous Situation: While Genki immediately starts teasing Hare about Fairy, it's unclear whether or not his feelings for her actually enter romantic territory.
  • Backstory: This episode delves into Hare's past, which was a mystery for much of the series.
  • Damsel out of Distress: When Wild takes Fairy hostage in order to delay the Searchers, she and Hare exchange a look before she quickly frees herself from his grasp.
  • Genre Savvy: Hare recognized how suspiciously coincidental Wild's arrival and ready solution were, and freely admits after he reveals his betrayal that he just wanted to believe in his old friend. Wild mocks him for it, revealing how he backstabbed them with their last job as well.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Wild believed his partners shared a special connection that he lacked; jealousy spurred him to betray them both and join Moo's forces.
  • Hostage for MacGuffin: The Black Weeds use the hare trio to force Holly and the other Searchers to hand over the Black Disc.
  • One Last Job: Though she'd prefer setting a good example for the kids, Fairy acknowledges that they desperately need supplies, and decides to join the boys when they set off to raid the warehouse.
  • Plot Parallel: Genki immediately assumes that Hare has a thing for Fairy, ignoring his irritated protests to the contrary. Wild presumed the exact same thing, with tragic consequences.
  • Regretful Traitor: Not at first, but after his old partners remind him of how close they used to be, Wild is visibly remorseful as he declares that it's too late for him to change and that he's 'rotten to the core'.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Hare's old team had this composition, complete with Wild Hare secretly turning on them out of envy.
  • Use Your Head: Hare headbutts Wild's crest of Moo hard enough to crack it, enabling it to be completely broken later.
