Recap / Monster Rancher S3 E11: Allan's Advice

Go To

Progressing down the road to the Legend Cup has grown harder with time, and Genki takes it upon himself to start strategizing more, telling himself that it'll be easy — after all, he won the Monster Championship back home! So that must mean he's got a natural talent for such things, right?

But his confidence is shaken when a Wood Golem attacks and his orders all get ignored, and he and Mocchi get separated from the rest of their friends. Fortunately, they're found by Allan, who's unlocked his old Worm and is raising it alongside the new one, Small Worm. Allan now helps raise Monsters and give them to good homes, and he just may be the one to restore Genki's self-worth.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Back from the Dead: Allan's first Worm was restored from a lost disc by the Phoenix, and he was able to successfully unlock it.
  • Be Yourself: How Allan summarizes his advice to Genki.
  • Blow You Away: Wood Golem uses a cyclone attack to keep Genki, Mocchi and the rest at bay until they figure out a way around it.
  • Book Ends: The group uses the exact same tactics against Wood Golem the second time around as they did during the first fight; however, they succeed during the rematch thanks to having rediscovered their focus with Genki and Mocchi's help.
  • Brutal Honesty: Golem and the others point out to Genki that he's not generally the sort who focuses on making plans ahead of time. Allan also gets rather harsh when telling him to snap out of his funk.
  • The Bus Came Back: Allan returns after a long time since Season 1.
  • Call-Back: Ironically, Genki has trouble recalling what Suezo's Secret Weapon is.
  • Centipede's Dilemma: Genki's problem in a nutshell; he was already strategizing and thinking on his feet, but convinces himself that he needs to plan things out more ahead of time, becoming overly dependent upon his notes and preplanned ideas.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Genki, Mocchi, and Wood Golem are all subjected to this when they fall into the river, separating the two younger heroes from their comrades and taking the villain out of the equation for a while, buying them time to meet up with Allan.
  • Figure It Out Yourself: Following their training battle, Allan pulls this on Genki, telling him off before abruptly leaving him to puzzle over what he told him and figure out what he was trying to communicate on his own.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Genki reasons that because he won the Monster Championship back home, he must possess a natural talent for planning things out.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After being defeated by the Searchers and hearing Genki's Badass Boast about how nobody will get the Disc Stone from them, Wood Golem flees in a panic.
  • Skewed Priorities: Genki's distraction over trying to puzzle out everyone's best moves and tactics causes him to accidentally ruin their dinner preparations. He then stays up all night trying to plan for every contingency, and having them not work out precisely the way he intended does a number on his self-confidence. Allan has to remind him that he can't rely exclusively upon his notes.
  • So Proud of You: Genki's utterly delighted to learn of how much Allan has grown, being moved to tears and embracing him while declaring how proud he is of how far he's come.
  • Tactical Withdrawal: The rest of the Searchers sans Genki and Mocchi engage in this when Wood Golem attacks them again. ...Though Tiger needs to be physically dragged away from the encounter.
  • The Worf Effect: Golem immediately gets into hand-to-hand combat with the Wood Golem, grappling with him until he's thrown onto his back. Hare, Suezo and Tiger are similarly repulsed upon attacking in order to show how much trouble the group's in.
