Recap / Monster Rancher S2 E22: Blue Skies

Go To

Moo continues to rampage across the land, destroying his own castle and everyone in it. The Searchers have found the Phoenix, but have no idea where its soul is or how to look for it. Luckily, Monol arrives to give them a last bit of advice: The Phoenix's soul was split into 5 pieces and inhabited 5 Monsters. Once brought together, if they fuse, the Phoenix will be revived.

Mocchi counts heads and realizes the Searchers have five Monsters, and while Hare dismisses it as a coincidence, Monol tells the group that they have the Phoenix's soul inside of them. Powered by Genki's courage and love for the Monsters, they can become the Phoenix. With Moo threatening to destroy the entire planet, the Searchers resolve to fuse...

But Genki finds it hard to go through with it, as fusing means their bodies and consciousness will disappear, just like when Big Blue fused with Pixie to become Granity. His friends reassure him, however, and Genki gathers the hope, tears, and courage of everyone on the planet to revive the Phoenix. The Phoenix and Moo do battle, with Moo nearly killing the firebird with his ultimate attack. Genki and the others give it one last boost of courage, and it breaks free and scorches its opponent, wrapping Moo in its fiery wings.

And then Moo remembers the ancient battle long ago, and decides that he cannot let neither himself nor the Phoenix exist. They grapple each other as they fly into the sky... and explode in a flash of light that removes the Baddies' crests and turns Lost Disks into normal Disks. The price paid was heavy—Holly's father is lost, as are Mocchi, Suezo, Golem, Tiger, and Hare.

If things couldn't get sad enough, Genki is knocked off of a dragon's back from the explosion and opens his eyes in the real world. He's unsure if the experience was even real, but when he sees the shoes he was given shortly after arriving in the Monster Rancher world, he realizes it was.

Genki heads home... and breaks down crying as he remembers the time spent with his friends. But he sees a vision of his friends that reassures him. They tell him to smile and move on with his life, and they'll always be in his heart. Genki takes their advice and heads home happily, knowing his friends will always be nearby.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Moo is defeated, and the Monster Rancher world is saved...but Suezo, Mocchi, Golem, Tiger and Hare sacrificed themselves to become the Phoenix, which has been destroyed, Holly's father was lost with Moo, and Genki has gone back to the real world.
  • But Now I Must Go: As if losing Suezo, Golem, Tiger, Hare, and Mocchi was sad enough, Genki ends up abruptly returning to his own world without being able to say good-bye to Holly.
  • Gondor Calls for Aid: When the Searchers are gathering the courage needed for the fusion, all the allies they've made across the land sense what they're doing and offer their energy, combining enough for Suezo, Mocchi, Golem, Tiger and Hare to fuse into the Phoenix's soul and finally awaken him.
  • Grand Finale: For Season 2. It was intended to be this for the series as a whole, but a Post-Script Season was made to give the series a more happy note to go out on.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Ultimately, the five monsters of the Searchers sacrifice themselves in order to save the world.
  • Mutual Kill: When Moo realizes he and the Phoenix will never be able to gain the advantage against one another, the both of them mutually self destruct.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Moo nearly reaches this point in his Berseker state, heading to an dormant volcano and intent on activating it so it can destroy the land. It's only when the Phoenix is revived that he's stopped before he can complete his goal.
  • Pre-Sacrifice Final Goodbye: Mocchi, Suezo, Golem, Tiger and Hare give parting words to Genki just before they fuse together with the Phoenix.
  • That Was Not a Dream: Upon waking up back in the real world, Genki wonders at first if he dreamed being in the Monster Rancher world...until he noticed he was wearing the shoes he had received there.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: It turns out Mocchi, Suezo, Golem, Tiger and Hare are all the pieces of the Phoenix's soul.
  • World-Healing Wave: After Moo and the Phoenix self-destruct, the energy from the Phoenix's body spreads across the land, hitting Lost Disks and turns them back into Mystery Disk so the monsters lost over the series can be reborn. Also, the majority of the Baddies become good again, as seen by their crests disappearing.
