Recap / Monster Rancher S1 E5: Tiger of the Wind

Go To

The five Searchers are making their way through some canyons when they have an unfortunate encounter with the Wild Pack: a group of wild wolves who make their living as bandits, led by the fearsome Tiger of the Wind. They ambush the group, overpowering them and stealing their valuables, including the Magic Stone. Before they leave, Tiger mocks Genki's helpless rage over the whole encounter: "Tears aren't enough."

Returning to their den, Tiger walks right into a snare — they've been discovered by Moo's forces! Despite Tiger ordering the others to run, Captain Dino and his forces slaughter the Datons and Datonares, take the Magic Stone, then drop the net he's tangled in into the ravine.

Some time later, Tiger awakens and discovers that the Searchers found him. Despite how he'd stolen from them before, they decided to help him instead of getting revenge, bandaging his wounds. Tiger assumes they were after the Stone and admits that it was stolen from him; Genki says that's not a problem, and it's not the only reason why they helped him. After all, he's not as evil as Moo, right? Tiger then explains that he hates Moo, recounting a past encounter with the Big Bad himself. The battle went poorly: Moo scarred Tiger's face and abducted his younger brother, Gray Wolf.

Despite his injuries, Tiger parts ways with the group... only to return when they track down Captain Dino and his men, in order to get his revenge. After taking down the captain, Tiger of the Wind decides to join the Searchers, so he can get revenge on Moo as well.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The Searchers earn Tiger's respect by showing him kindness in his time of need despite how he robbed them earlier.
  • Break the Haughty: Tiger and the Wild Pack don't think much of the little group, and he only participates in the ambush to 'pass some time'. Then they find that Captain Dino discovered their den while they were away and set up a trap...
  • Changed My Mind, Kid: Even after they helped bandage him up, Tiger refuses to join the Searchers at first. But he tracks the group down in time to help out when Genki and Mocchi get surrounded.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Gray Wolf, Tiger's little brother, comes up again later...
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Even while he's lecturing Genki about how Life Isn't Fair, he compliments him on being brave and having a good heart.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Tiger's fights with Genki and Mocchi are rather one-sided.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Tiger used to have a brother named Gray Wolf, whom he looked after ever since they were pups. But when they encountered Moo, Tiger wasn't able to protect him, ending up with a facial scar for his troubles.
  • Decapitated Army: Captain Dino's death causes his men to flee, terrified.
  • The Dreaded: Holly and Suezo have heard of Tiger of the Wind before, and he's amused that even children know his name.
  • Duck Season, Rabbit Season: A physical variant: Suezo attempts to hide the Magic Stone inside his mouth. However, one of the Datons suspects he's doing this, and keeps ordering him to move his tongue around until Suezo finally gets confused enough to accidentally reveal his treasure.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Despite stealing from the Searchers simply because he can, Tiger doesn't seriously harm any of them, and gives Genki some blunt advice about how bravery and recklessness aren't enough.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: The scar across Tiger's face was given to him by Moo himself.
  • Evil Counterpart: Captain Dino serves as a brief one for Tiger. Both are the leaders of their respective groups, and Dino's Pride and arrogance matches the way Tiger acts while robbing the Searchers. However, Dino has absolutely no qualms about killing anyone who gets in his way.
  • Fastball Special:
    • In order to help them find the Dinos quickly, Suezo has Golem toss him into the air so he can get a good view of their surroundings. They need to work on the landing, though...
    • Golem also chucks Mocchi at Captain Dino, which helps them reclaim the Magic Stone.
  • Foreshadowing: When Tiger claims the Magic Stone and puts it on as a pendant, Holly notices that it's glowing. After Tiger ends up joining, she wonders if the Stone is leading them to Mystery Discs... or to each other.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Tiger of the Wind decides to stop living as a bandit preying on travelers and joins the Searchers in their quest to find the Phoenix and stop Moo.
  • History Repeats: Captain Dino routing the Wild Pack echoes how Moo wiped out Tiger's group once before.
  • Insistent Terminology: Holly describes the Wild Pack as monsters who escaped from their masters and became wild. Tiger retorts that they became free.
  • Ironic Echo: "That isn't enough/Tears aren't enough." Said first by Tiger when mocking Genki's frustration over being robbed, then by Captain Dino when mocking Tiger's reaction to having his pack slaughtered in front of him.
  • Life Isn't Fair: Tiger gives a speech about this to Genki combined with a "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
Tiger: You're a very brave, and very foolish little human. You rush in head first not bothering to even think of the consequences. You don't understand that sometimes, bravery isn't enough. Life can be hard, little human, hard and unfair—and you must know this. Don't. Be. Reckless. You're young, brave, and you have a good heart—but in this world, that isn't enough. I know that better than anyone.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Despite being ordered to run, the Wild Pack refuses to abandon their trapped leader.
  • Oh, Crap!: Tiger upon realizing that Captain Dino isn't about to let the others go.
  • Sand In My Eyes: After Tiger steals the Magic Stone, Genki plays off his tears by claiming he just got sand in his eyes.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: Tiger's rematch with Captain Dino plays out this way.
  • Sole Survivor: Tiger ends up as the only member of the Wild Pack to survive their first encounter with Captain Dino.
