Recap / Monster Rancher S1 E3: Guardian of the Disks

Go To

The Searchers follow the Magic Stone into a forest where an 'enigma' reportedly exists. There they find an abandoned temple full of Lost Disks (Mystery Disks that are formed when a monster runs out of life and can never be unlocked) guarded by a Golem. However, a troop of Evil Jells are also in the area, hoping to steal these disks for Moo!

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Explanation Extrication:
    • The original Japanese episode mentions that Golem's family has watched over the mass grave for generations; no mention of this is made in the English Dub.
    • Captain Jell also specifies that Moo is getting annoyed with his unit's lack of results. This makes him desperate enough to loot the Lost Discs, since they'll be bringing something back at least.
  • Berserk Button:
    • When Suezo first tries to invite Golem along, he mentions that "a big guy like you could protect us." Golem gets offended at this, stating flatly that fighting is wrong.
    • And don't do anything to the Lost Discs...
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As the Jells discover when they attempt to steal the Lost Discs.
  • Cessation of Existence: This episode establishes that when a monster dies, their body turns into a Lost Disc.
  • Decapitated Army: Captain Jell dies first, which completely demoralizes his troops and causes them to try and flee. This doesn't save any of them.
  • The Dreaded: An old woman warms them about the 'enigma of the forest'... who turns out to be Golem.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Captain Jell treats his men this way.
  • Empathic Environment: After driving them into the fortress to take shelter, the rain clears up while Golem is leading the Searchers towards the mass grave, with the moon coming out from behind the clouds just in time to illuminate the area.
  • Enchanted Forest: The enigma's forest turns out to be one of these.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Golem's is to straighten a flower Genki had trod upon and shelter it from wind.
  • Face Fault: Genki tempts fate by boldly declaring nothing's going to stop them from finding the Phoenix. Mocchi chooses that moment to declare he's hungry, and Genki and Suezo both face-fault.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Genki declares that the worst kind of monster "always lives in a huge spooky castle", right before Suezo and the others spot a prime example of such.
  • Gentle Giant: Golem, despite his frightening reputation, turns out to be one of these.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Golem gains one along with a Battle Aura when the Jells start uprooting Lost Disks.
  • Going in Circles: The Searchers wind up doing this in the forest, with Holly noting that they've passed by an area twice before.
  • Heavy Sleeper: One of the Jells manages to sleep through his captain's tirades and misses the order to move out, only waking up after one of the Searchers steps on him.
  • Hostile Weather: The Searchers meet Golem after taking shelter inside the ruins, leading to a Lightning Reveal.
  • Instant Gravestone: Upon death, monsters immediately turn into a Lost Disk right wherever they fell.
  • Ironic Echo Cut: Genki declares that they'll make it through the woods in five minutes. Cut to sunset and Suezo mockingly repeating the kid's claim in a high-pitched, mocking tone.
  • Mineral MacGuffin: The Magic Stone activates on its own, pointing Holly and the rest of the Searchers towards the fortress ruins. The timing makes it seem as though it did this in direct response to her attempting to avoid the fortress entirely.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Golem gets this when his Unstoppable Rage wears off.
  • Never Say "Die": While the episode revolves heavily around death and features the first onscreen killing, never once are the words "die" or "kill" uttered by any character. The deceased monsters are referred to only as "Lost", and Golem's killing of the Jells is described by Suezo as "[making] them Lost Monsters".
  • Outscare the Enemy: When one of the Jells expresses reluctance to enter the forest with the "enigma", Captain Jell asks "who are you more frightened of, the enigma, or Moo?" It's Moo, of course.
  • Robbing the Dead: The Jells try to take all of the Lost Disks that Golem was protecting. This doesn't end well.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After they spot the fortress in the forest, Holly attempts to turn on her heels and walk in the exact opposite direction from it, only for a sudden strike of lightning to send her scurrying back to the others.
  • Short Cuts Make Long Delays: Discussed; Genki claims that the only reason they're still in the forest is because he decided to take a detour. Holly asks "Is detour another word for lost?"
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Captain Jell certainly thinks this about his Evil Jells.
  • Tempting Fate: Genki continues having a problem with this, making light of the whole concept of there being a spooky enigma and reassuring the others that they'll get through the forest 'in five minutes'.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Golem flies into one when the Evil Jells start looting the grounds.
  • Villains Want Mercy: When Golem starts tearing through their ranks, starting with Captain Jell, the others try to flee, and the last one begs for mercy. Unfortunately, Golem's beyond hearing them at this point.
