Recap / Monster Rancher S1 E21: The Mocchi Cannon

Go To

Crossing a vast desert, the heroes run across Gali in his castle. He's surprisingly polite to the heroes and offers them food and water, but it turns out to be a distraction so he can completely drain them of energy.

Mocchi is the only one to escape the attack, and tries to defeat Gali on his own—but his attacks just aren't strong enough. When Genki is able to revitalize his friends, the tables turn—until Gali whips up a sand hurricane and threatens to destroy everything. Mocchi then learns a new attack, the Mocchi Cannon, and obliterates him in one shot. The second of the Big Bad Four has been defeated!

This episode contains examples of:

  • Blatant Lies: After his attempt to show off leads to him crashing into a cavern wall, Suezo declares that it may have looked like he hit the wall, but it was all an illusion! ...Followed by him peeling out of the crater and faceplanting.
  • Book Ends: Gali brings the Searchers right to his doorstep by sweeping them all up in a hurricane. He attempts to do so again at the climax, only succeeding in destroying his own followers before Mocchi blasts him.
  • Breath Weapon: Mocchi gains the ability to fire a powerful blast of energy from his mouth, which he uses to take out Gali. Genki declares they'll call it the Mocchi Cannon.
  • Can't Catch Up: Suezo boasts about how much stronger he's supposedly become, attempting (and failing) to show off his newfound powers. This makes Mocchi question whether or not he's lagging behind the others in terms of personal growth.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: Triggered by Mocchi complaining about how he's hungry again.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Gali feigns respect for the Searchers in order to lure them into a trap.
  • Hope Spot: Deliberately invoked by Gali; Mocchi scours his palace for a way to help the others out of the pit, finds a rope, and returns to find Gali there surrounded by his Sandy Troops, gloating about how the hole is slowly closing.
  • It's the Journey That Counts: Discussed. Tiger notes that the Magic Stone seems to point in different directions each day, with Hare chiming in that they're constantly running into trouble. Holly and Genki reason that it's about the experiences they're having along the way, and that their travels are making them stronger. Notably, this paired with Suezo's bragging leads Mocchi to start doubting himself, worrying that he hasn't learned as much as everyone else.
  • Life Drain: Gali drains the heroes of their energy and leaves them too tired to stand.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: Not only does Gali start destroying his own palace after his mask cracks, it starts collapsing after his demise, forcing the heroes to flee.
  • No, Mr. Bond, I Expect You to Dine: Gali invites the Searchers for lunch. They're naturally suspicious of poisoning, but Gali assures them that if he wanted to poison them, he would have tainted the fountain they drank from. While they're eating, however, his guards leap out to attack him.
  • One-Hit Kill: All it takes is one blast from Mocchi's new Mocchi Cannon technique to take down Gali.
  • Spanner in the Works: Mocchi was shielded from Gali's Life Drain attack, and in turn causes Genki to revitalize the others.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Genki breaking off one of the sun rays on his mask sends Gali into one of these, as he whips up a hurricane that swallows up his own troops while ranting about how he'll destroy everything.
