Recap / Monster Rancher S1 E14: Holly's Rescue

Go To

Genki and the Searchers team up with the Pirate Dragons, Pixie, and Big Blue to rescue Holly. Meanwhile, Moo tells Holly what happened after her father left the village and unlocked Moo in the process, merging with the evil being. He gives her her father's dagger as proof, and asks her to join him. Holly refuses, so Moo uses her Magic Stone to search for what he wanted—the location of his original, ancient body.

Genki and the others try to save Holly, but they are no match for Moo. It's only through Pixie's intervention that they're able to escape with the Magic Stone, and when Moo blasts her out of the window, Genki shows his strength by easily catching her in his arms. The Searchers narrowly escape, and Moo leaves to excavate his original body, without letting them know where they're going.

And Holly has told no one about the secret Moo revealed...

This episode contains examples of:

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear just how much Moo is embellishing the tale of how Holly's father found the disc in which his soul was sealed, particularly when it comes to his claims about the man's motivations.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In a sense: while the Searchers rescue Holly, retrieve the Magic Stone and escape, Moo got the information on where his original body is, so it doesn't matter. Holly and the Stone were just a plus.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Pixie saves the group from Moo, and the Dragons save her when Moo blasts her away.
  • Cruel Mercy: Moo claims to have known where Holly and Suezo were hiding while their village was being destroyed, and that he deliberately spared their lives in order to play the long game and foster more hatred inside of her.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Pixie is able to damage Moo and he's forced to use all of his current power to stop her, preventing a complete Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Destination Defenestration: Pixie suffers this when Moo blasts her away, damaging her wings so that she can't save herself.
  • Super-Strong Child: Genki catches Pixie in his arms.
  • Glass Smack and Slide: Played for Drama during the rematch; the Searchers are trying to break the window and escape, but it's sturdy enough that Moo is able to throw several of them directly into it without it breaking.
  • Hidden Eyes: Holly's father has these throughout Moo's Flashback, constantly overshadowed by his hat in order to make him look creepily focused upon his search.
  • Hope Bringer: Falcon compliments Genki for showing him that it's possible to stand up against Moo after all. He also notes how the Searchers were able to convince Pixie to pull off a Heel–Face Turn despite her being one of Moo's elite generals.
  • Iconic Item: Holly recognizes the distinctive design of her father's dagger and scabbard.
  • Irony: Holly's father went off in search of the Phoenix after leaving their village and ended up awakening the Phoenix's mortal enemy: Moo.
  • Just Between You and Me: Moo tells Holly how her father unlocked him, and gives out personal information to further his claim of being her father.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: So much it can be considered a Shout-Out to how similar it is when Holly is told this. Though it's not Moo herself that is her father, but the man he's using as his current vessel.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Ultimately, it doesn't matter how accurate any of Moo's claims are, or how Holly reacts; he can feed off her emotional turmoil, and takes considerable glee in taunting her about this.
  • No-Sell: None of the Searchers' attacks faze Moo, forcing them to focus upon evading and escaping.
  • The Power of Hate: Moo is fueled by hatred, and claims that he let Holly live specifically with the intent of feeding off her anger. He also declares that the heroes' hatred of him will turn them into baddies without him having to lift a finger to help their corruption along.
  • Revenge: Moo claims that the reason Holly's father was searching for the Phoenix was out of resentment to being exiled from the village and wanted to show that a legendary monster could be found without the village's Magic Stone. How much of it was Moo being an Unreliable Narrator is unknown.
  • Secret-Keeper: Holly keeps the knowledge that Moo is her father a secret.
  • Shadow Discretion Shot: A terrifying one occurs as Moo possesses Holly's father and transforms him into his host body.
  • Super Window Jump: Pulled off by the Searchers once Pixie is able to shatter the glass for them.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her father's dagger serves as one for Holly after the heroes escape.
