Recap / Monster Rancher S1 E11: Pixie's Defeat

Go To

With the majority of the Searchers captured and Genki and Mocchi almost killed, to say morale is low for our heroes is an understatement. Genki and Mocchi refuse to give up, however, and enact a plan to free their friends and stop Pixie from taking any more hostages. Meanwhile, Pixie herself is having second thoughts about where her loyalty lies...

With the other Searchers and her human slaves freed thanks to Genki, Pixie takes it out on Mocchi and battles the group alongside Big Blue. It's an even battle, but the heroes are helped by a surprise attack from Golem and everyone attacking Pixie as one.

When Pixie tries to pull a cheap shot, Tiger pounces to stop her... and her energy ball goes wild and starts to collapse the ruins she was knocked into. Genki immediately runs to protect her, and when they're dug out, both Genki and Pixie are unharmed.

Defeated, Pixie and Big Blue make amends with the humans and the Searchers, though they're not quite friends yet. Genki wishes the pair good luck, and the group heads off, having defeated powerful enemies and made powerful allies.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Buried Alive: Genki and Pixie get trapped together in the fallen ruins, but get dug out by the others.
  • Chekhov's Gun: It's mentioned that Moo is on his way to North Town in order to turn the rebels into more of his minions.
  • Cycle of Revenge: It's revealed that the previous human ruler of this area captured and enslaved lots of monsters in order to excavate the ruins, searching for treasure. Pixie was among the enslaved. After they revolted, she started enslaving humans to further Moo's goals. Following her defeat, Rocco tells the other former slaves not to go after her, hoping to break the cycle.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Pixie was born a slave herself, and revolted to punish the humans.
  • Eyes Never Lie: Golem tells Pixie that she has 'sad eyes'
  • Heel–Face Turn: Pixie and Big Blue decide to make amends with the humans and leave to avoid Moo's wrath.
  • Hostage Situation: While the captured Searchers have enough power that they could probably escape on their own, they know that Pixie will just punish the other slaves.
  • Improvised Weapon: The rioters use shovels and pickaxes when fighting back.
  • The Power of Friendship: By working together as a team, the Searchers are able to wear Pixie down... and by repeatedly reaching out to her, they eventually get her to turn away from Moo.
  • Save the Villain: Genki's so determined to do this that he rushes right into the collapsing ruins.
  • Undying Loyalty: When Pixie's about to be buried under the collapsing ruins, Big Blue runs in to shield her at the same time Genki does.
  • [Verb] This!: Used in the dub as a Shut Up, Kirk!.
Genki: You can't defeat us because we're a team, Pixie. If one of us is down, the others will step in. You've gotta see that.
    Pixie: Team this. [attacks]
  • Villainous Breakdown: As she loses control of the situation — and is faced with Genki's repeated attempts to reach out to her — Pixie keeps lashing out. This culminates in her refusing to make any effort to escape the collapsing ruins, saying that Moo will punish her failure anyway, so there's no point.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In the unedited version, Genki headbutts Pixie, and Tiger visibly pounces on her. In either version, Mocchi gives her a good smack with the Cherry Blossom Blizzard.
