It's a normal day at Monster High, until a vampiric convoy arrives—according to their leader Lord Stoker, Draculaura has been chosen by the Vampire's Heart as the next vampire queen! But after being whisked away to Castle Dracool for the coronation, it turns out the heart was a fake. When Draculaura confronts Stoker with that information, he admits he set it up to make her his Puppet Queen—because he knew her years ago and believes her too weak to challenge him. Tearful, she runs to her friends and they all make a plan to find the rightful heir: Draculaura's old friend Elissabat, who suddenly fled the court 500 years prior.

With a book of clues from her written in poetic code, they jet around the world to try and find her. In Londoom, they meet Clawdia Wolf, Clawdeen's brainy big sis, and find a letter that points them to New Goreleans. Here, they find Honey Swamp and the last letter pointing them to Hauntlywood. Going off of a movie poster with actress Veronica Von Vamp holding the Heart, they manage to get into the studio (thanks to a little friendly coercion from Cleo to a security guard). Once inside they meet Viperine Gorgon, Von Vamp's makeup artist, who gets the ghouls into the trailer. To their disappointment, the heart Von Vamp has is also a fake. It is Hauntlywood, after all.

Draculaura refuses to give up, and implores Von Vamp to find Elissabat with a speech... which happens to also be a You Are Better Than You Think You Are speech, because Von Vamp is Elissabat. Veronica leaves the trailer, still fearful, leaving the ghouls to tie things up on their own.
