Recap / Monk S7E10 "Mr. Monk's Other Brother"

Go To

Monk wakes up in the middle of the night to find a most unwelcome visitor — a dirty, unkempt figure who claims to be his half-brother, Jack Jr. Accused of the murder of beloved social worker Lindsey Bishop, Jack begs Monk to clear his name before he goes back to prison. Reluctantly, Monk takes the case.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Big Brother Instinct: Zigzagged. Monk is willing to help his younger half-brother clear his name, but he repeatedly tries to turn Jack Jr. in to the police when he proves himself to be untrustworthy and deceptive.
  • Birds of a Feather: Monk and Jack Jr. begin to bond over watching The Incredible Shrinking Man together, which happens to be their father's favorite movie. Although Jack Jr. got more father-son time from Jack than Monk, both have a mutual understanding that Jack Sr. wasn't a very good father.
  • Car Fu: After Natalie tosses him her keys so he can get her phone and call 911, Jack Jr. starts the engine and peels out. However, just as Reese closes in to shoot his brother and Natalie, he bursts through a fence coming from the other direction, hitting Reese and knocking him unconscious.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The gold watch found at Lindsey’s place gets swiped by Jack Jr. When Monk takes a closer look at it, he notices initials inscribed on the watch’s back, which clues him in on who the murderer is.
  • Clear My Name: One of the few statements Jack Jr. says which we can be sure is true, is that he went to Adrian's house in order to have his name cleared of murder.
  • Crocodile Tears: As a con artist, Jack, Jr. turns out to have mastered this. At one point, he fakes hysterical sobbing while posing as a relative of Lindsey, to get into the her residence.
Adrian: I can't help but notice your fake crying looks a lot like your real crying.
  • A Deadly Affair: Lindsey and Daniel Reese were having an affair, which somehow went wrong and led to Reese deciding to kill her. To cover it up, he arranged for an inmate to escape at the same time.
  • Deceased Fall-Guy Gambit: This is what Daniel was hoping would happen, as he planned to shoot Norman Logan (or Jack) once he got out of the sewers and went to Lindsay's car, framing him for the murder. It probably could have worked if he could shoot the broad side of a barn.
  • Dirty Coward: Subverted. It looks like Jack Jr. abandons Monk and Natalie at Reese’s cabin, but he goes around in Natalie’s car and runs Reese down.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Norman "Shiv" Logan accepted a plan to escape the prison from guard Daniel Reese, and didn't seem to stop and wonder or ask why Daniel would do so in the first place.
  • Freudian Slip: While he and Adrian are discussing how Jack Sr. was a lousy father, Jack Jr. offhandedly tries to justify that in their father's defense, he wasn't the same after Jack Jr.'s mother died. Bear in mind that just earlier, Jack Jr. had Monk talk to his "mother" on the phone to vouch for him. Hearing him slip up and say his mother died lets Monk know that wasn't Jack Jr.'s mother on the phone.
  • He Knows Too Much: Daniel kills Shiv Logan to prevent him from revealing just where the escape plan came from.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end of the episode, after hauling Jack Jr. back to prison, Randy notices that the keys to his handcuffs are missing...
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Reese seems to have graduated with honors. In the climax, he's shooting at Adrian, Jack, and Natalie from on top of his roof, and, in spite of the fairly close distance, manages to miss every shot. The flashback to the murder shows him doing the same when he tried to shoot Jack.
  • Mama Didn't Raise No Criminal: Jack manages to cajole Monk into letting him call his mother before he's remanded back to federal custody. Jack's mother wails about how her son couldn't have committed murder (though she admits he's guilty of many other things) and begs Monk to clear him. It turns out later that Jack's mother has been dead for some time, but Jack never reveals who the woman was.
  • Meaningful Echo: When he's first trying to avoid Monk turning him in, Jack calls himself Monk's brother, and, when the fact that he's only his half-brother comes up, he justifies it as "rounding up." At the end, Monk calls Jack his brother. Jack says he's only Monk's half-brother, and Monk justifies it as "rounding up."
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: One of the prisoners and the episode's second murder victim is nicknamed "Shiv."
  • Never Going Back to Prison: Jack begs Monk repeatedly not to send him back to prison before clearing his name, saying at one point that everyone in the prison loved Lindsey and if he gets sent back with her murder still on his rap sheet, his fellow inmates will kill him. He does seem calm about the idea in the end, though he's also implied to have swiped Disher's handcuff keys.
  • Sequel Episode: The episode follows up on "Mr. Monk Meets His Dad," actually introducing the slacker half-brother Jack Monk Sr. mentioned while he and Monk were traveling cross-country.
  • Stupid Crooks: Jack describes Shiv Logan as one of these, which is likely was Daniel chose him to be his patsy.
  • Sticky Fingers: Jack has a habit of swiping things that don't belong to him. In the climax, it’s revealed he stole Monk’s gun and used it to return fire when Reese starts shooting at them.
  • Tricked into Escaping: The episode involved Adrian's half-brother Jack Jr. escaping from jail only to get framed for killing prison social worker Lindsey Bishop during the getaway. As it turns out, the plan was created by prison guard Daniel Reese, the actual killer, and given to Jack Jr.'s cellmate, with the idea of getting a patsy.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Jack Jr. is a shameless grifter and it's difficult for anyone, including his half-brother the detective, to figure out when or if he's actually telling the truth.
