Recap / Monk S5E12 "Mr. Monk Is at Your Service"

Go To

Monk goes undercover as a butler to find out what really happened to the wealthy neighbors of Natalie's parents.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Absence of Evidence: Natalie realizes the 911 call was faked when she notices there weren't any sounds of the frogs that were at the crash site.
  • Blackmail Backfire: Edward was blackmailing Paul about the truth behind his parents' death, only for Paul to find out and murder him.
  • Chekhov's Skill: It's mentioned that Paul sounds like his late father, which is how he was able to fake the 911 call.
  • Fake Pregnancy: Natalie pulls this trope in order to attend Paul's party, in hopes it would give him second thoughts from making a move on her. For the most part, it works.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Natalie's parents think Paul is a sweet boy who deserves a chance to go out with Natalie, especially since the loss of his parents means he deserves her support. They couldn't be further from the truth. For starters, he's an entitled creep who would gladly hurt anyone to get to Natalie. And that's just the beginning: he murdered his step-mother to earn the inheritance, killed his butler to keep it secret, and nearly killed Natalie (even under the impression she was pregnant) when she knows too much.
  • Inheritance Murder: A very elaborate one. Paul's dad did die of natural circumstances, but his will stated that his wife would inherit his fortune if he passed before she did. Paul didn't want that, so he killed his step-mother and made it look like his dad died after her to ensure he inherited everything.
  • Irony: In-Universe, Natalie was faking her pregnancy to ward off Paul. But in real life, Natalie's actress was indeed pregnant at the time. In fact, Natalie's belly is hidden during the non-pregnant scenes.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: Monk gets his undercover name "Adrian Melville" from a copy of Moby-Dick he sees in the room
  • Reverse Whodunnit: The episode starts with Paul murdering his butler for blackmailing him with something. What it is exactly is what the viewers find out in the episode.
  • Stalker with a Crush: For the longest time, Paul Buchanan has wanted Natalie to go out with him, but she didn't feel the same way for him. In fact, he disgusts her with how entitled and 'creepy' he is, as she suspects he's the reason her prom date was injured so he could knock out the competition.
  • White Glove Test: When Monk goes undercover as Natalie's parents' butler, his uniform includes white gloves, which he uses to inspect the furniture. Finding no dust makes him smile.
