Go To

Airdate: July 10, 2023

Molly and her family embark on a river journey to Old Crow, a Gwich’in village in Canada, so that they can honor the late Grandma Catherine.

"Wise Raven and Old Crow" contains the following tropes:

  • Always with You: Layla tells Molly that Grandma Catherine will always be with them, even though she is dead.
  • Arc Words: Molly keeps seeing apparitions of Grandma Catherine, who tells her each time "I have something for you."
  • Animal Motif: Corvids. A raven guides Molly in her dreams and along the river, and is connected to her grandmother Catherine. And the town the Mabrays are headed to is named Old Crow.
  • Backseat Driver: Parodied/referenced. Tooey is feeding milk to Bonky, and Trini keeps telling him what to do without actually doing anything herself. Tooey tells her to quit "backseat milking."
  • Big Eater: Several characters note that Bonky is super hungry all the time.
  • Break the Cutie: Trini gets a moment of this when Bonky is lost. She starts crying, saying that it's her fault that Bonky went missing.
  • Clever Crows: A raven sends a message to Molly, telling her that she and her family need to travel to the village on the river. It is even reflected in the title of the special, where "Wise Raven" is for the raven's wisdom, and "Old Crow" is the village.
  • Cooldown Hug: Tooey gives one to Trini, like what Molly would do.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Molly has a dream where Grandma Catherine tells her that she has something for her, and she needs to come get it.
  • Dramatic Drop: Trini drops a bottle of milk when she finds out that Bonky has gone missing.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: In Molly's dream, Grandma Catherine appears in the light as a shadow, and steps out to reveal herself to Molly.
  • Extra-Long Episode: Like "Molly and the Great One," it is an extended episode of the show, clocking in at 58 minutes.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Bonky will try to eat everything, and even chews on the nipples of milk bottles.
  • Facepalm: Walter facepalms while chiding Molly for not tying the boat's rope correctly.
  • Flashback: Molly has a flashback to when she was little and Grandma Catherine was still alive, and she taught her how to tan hides.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Molly ties the boat's rope to a tree, but she doesn't finish it because she gets distracted helping a frog. The tie comes undone and the boat starts drifting backwards, foreshadowing
    • Bonky keeps shaking on the wires of his pen, breaking the lock little by little, foreshadowing his escape.
  • Given Name Reveal: Nat's last name (and by extension Cliff's last name and Layla's maiden name) is revealed to be Kidelee.
  • Granny Classic: Grandma Catherine looks like a typical grandma, as she wears a yellow dress with a pink cardigan with a floral pattern. She is also nurturing, as she is said to have helped delivered tons of babies.
  • Group Hug: Molly, Layla, Randall, Jack, and Merna engage in one.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Connie offers to take care of the baby moose. She already has some turkeys, so she figures that the turkeys and moose should get along fine. Cut to the moose scaring the turkeys and them running away from each other.
  • It's All My Fault: Trini says that her it's her fault that Bonky went missing, since she was the last one to see him.
  • Match Cut: A closeup of Molly scraping a hide cuts to a flashback scene of Grandma Catherine doing the same thing.
  • Meaningful Name: Trini names the baby moose "Bonky" because he likes to bonk his head on things.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: While tying the boat's rope to a tree, Molly helps out a frog. However, this causes her to not tie the rope securely and for the boat to drift away.
  • Oh, Crap!: Molly when she realizes that she didn't tie the rope securely and it drifted away.
  • Posthumous Character: Grandma Catherine died when Molly was three.
  • Prophetic Dream: Molly has a dream where she travels on a river, which foretells the Mabrays going on a river trip to the village.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The B-plot of the special is about Tooey, Trini, and Connie taking care of a baby moose they name Bonky.
  • What Would X Do?: Trini and Tooey are lost without Molly there to help them. They think of what Molly would do, and they remember that Molly would do research and look things up. Later, when Bonky goes missing, Trini and Tooey do what Molly would do and look for clues.
  • You Remind Me of X: Layla tells Molly that she reminds her of Grandma Catherine, since they both love to research things.
