Go To

Air date: October 11, 2019

Ice Sculpture: Molly organizes an ice-sculpting competition in Qyah.

"Ice Sculpture" contains the following tropes:

  • Determinator: Molly refuses to give up on the ice sculpture contest, even though daytime temperatures are forecast to be too high, and it's difficult to light the contest grounds at night.
  • Good Parents: When the kids take a break from powering the lights, dads Walter, Kenji and Daniel step in and keep pedaling—despite the bikes being comically too small for them to pedal easily.
  • Hidden Depths: Layla was a competitive ice sculptor before her job and family took priority.
  • MacGyvering: Molly is inspired by Mr. Rowley's snow bike to come up with a power generation system to light the contest grounds using the kids' bikes and car batteries.
  • Trash Talk: The competitors for the ice sculpture contest engage in friendly rounds of this while stocking up on supplies.

Tale of the Totem: Molly and Randall accidentally lose a piece of the totem pole needed for the totem pole raising in Sitka.

"Tale of the Totem" contains the following tropes:

  • 2D Visuals, 3D Effects: The actual raising of the totem pole is entirely computer animated.
  • Continuity Nod: Aunt Merna still isn't big on hugs, and gives Molly an awkward pat on the head in response to one.
  • Easily Forgiven: Uncle Jack isn't that upset about Randall and Molly losing one of the shells, as he too plays with and loses them regularly.
  • Foreshadowing: As soon as the Mabrays land in Sitka, Molly spots some sea otters eating shellfish. Later on, Aunt Merna reveals that finding the shells Molly and Randall need for the totem pole is as simple as finding hungry otters.
  • Funny Background Event: While Uncle Jack is explaining the totem pole to Molly, Randall plays with a mask in the background, knocking it off the wall and catching it before awkwardly putting it back.
  • Mentor Archetype: Uncle Jack takes Randall on as his apprentice totem pole carver.
  • Not So Above It All: Uncle Jack admits that he also likes playing with the abalone shells he uses, and he tends to lose them as well.
