"So He Looked Like Dad. It Was Just Dinner, Right?"
"I don't know what it feels like to have a man look after you just 'cause."
Maddy (Julia Garner), a young engineer seeking paternal affection, enters into a confusing relationship with an older coworker, Peter (Shea Whigham).
Tropes in this episode:
- Age-Gap Romance: Maddy estimates that Peter is about 30 years older than her. He already has a young grandson. Subverted, however — Peter and the audience are led to believe that Maddy's intentions are at least partially sexual, but it turns out that she's just seeking a father figure.
- Disappeared Dad: Maddy's father died when she was eleven, which is why she projects onto Peter so strongly.
- Full-Name Basis: Peter calls Maddy "Madeline", like her father did.
- Token Black Friend: Maddy's black best friend Tami, who's not developed much beyond having a good relationship with her father (to contrast with Maddy's own daddy issues).
