• Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Franklin Weston seems like a genial, stuffy old man who's a bit out of touch with reality. In actual fact, he's a gambling addict who pimped out his granddaughter, then one of his granddaughter's friends - implicitly her girlfriend - to the Mayor in return for support in returning to the City Council and covering the debts.
• Happily Adopted: Jane, in fact if not in law (the situation is a little ambiguous).
• Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: In addition to solving Kitty Pace's murder, some attention is given to solving who was the father of her unborn child.
• Mama Bear: Phryne regarding Jane in particular, explicitly referring to her as "my daughter", and to the Flower Maidens in general, deciding to teach them how to fight after one is murdered.
• Wife Husbandry: An exceptionally dark, and realistic, depiction - Franklin Weston pimps out his teenage granddaughter to the Mayor to cover his gambling debts, who showered her with gifts and told her he wanted to make her his "proper girlfriend", before Weston instead set up one of the other flower maidens, Kitty, the eventual murder victim, in their beach hut for the Mayor's convenience. This resulted in her pregnancy and eventual murder.
