Directed by Matt Reeves

Paul Callan is an investigator of modern miracles for the Catholic church. While on sabbatical in Arizona he is sent to inquire about a sick young boy, Tommy Ferguson, who allegedly has healing powers.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Science Is Bad: Kinda sorta. When Paul identifies scientific reasons for the "miracles" presented to him he feels like he disappoints people. When he experiences a real miracle the church dismisses it due to lack of evidence, disappointing him.
  • Creepy Good: Alva randomly pops up in the background, first in a car, spying on Paul, and then again after Paul gets HIT BY A TRAIN, lurking behind Tommy Ferguson. These are appearances that would not necessarily inspire confidence. When the character is finally given lines with Paul in the last few minutes of the episode, he is weirdly intense, though this was the pilot and his disposition is slightly more agreeable in the later episodes.
  • Arc Words: In a bizarre Dream Sequence / Nightmare Sequence Paul sees the words "God is coming" written on a water tower.
  • Jump Scare: And how. Alva abruptly pounds his fist on the diner table while in conversation with Paul. Apparently this was not scripted - Angus Macfadyen decided to do it in the moment and successfully scared the snot out of Skeet Ulrich, the director, and everyone within fifty feet of the set.
