Recap / Milo Murphy's Law S1E19 "Battle of the Bands"

Go To

Milo, Melissa, Zack, and Mort's band enters the battle of the bands. Zack discovers his old boy band is competing in the battle.

Tropes:

  • The Band Minus the Face: In-Universe, as the Lumberzacks are now headed by Max and called Lumbermax.
  • Battle of the Bands: Milo and the gang enter just to get experience playing in front of people. However, Zack wants to win because his old band was being annoying and they couldn't take a hint about his sentiment.
  • Flashback... Back... Back...: Parodied.
Zack: It was the year 2016...
    (echo): 16... 16... 16... 16...
Milo: Sorry, I had the reverb up all the way.
  • Identically Named Group: The Lumbermaxes are now all named Max.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Lampshaded when Milo, Melissa, and Zack talk about Zack's old boy band and Mort has no idea what they're talking about.
Mort: Who are the Lumberzacks? Is there some backstory I'm not a—
Zack: It was the year 2016...
  • Music Stories: With Mort Lampshading all of the tropes that they fall into.
  • Old Shame: In-Universe. This is revisited once again and Zack is too embarrassed to ever be a part of his old band again. If anything, Zack finds them too annoying. Once they tell him he's back in the band, Zack tries to make it clear that he doesn't want to rejoin, and they cannot take a hint. Even Slash tells Zack to just walk away.
  • One-Man Band: Narrowly averted when Zack goes crazy and almost decides to do the whole act by himself, playing all four instruments.
  • One-Steve Limit: When Max took over the band, the other members changed their name to "Max" as well. (Zack is mildly resentful that they didn't offer to do the same when he was lead singer.)
  • Out of Focus: Since the conflict of this episode is about Zack's attitude, Murphy's Law is pretty much just used for slapstick.
  • Rock is Authentic, Pop is Shallow: A Battle of the Bands between Just Getting Started (the heroes' homegrown band with a more 'rock' sound) and the Lumbermaxes (a Boy Band with corporate sponsorship, commercial success, but a lack of individuality, to the point that they are all named Max).
  • Special Guest: Slash appears as a special guest judge for the Battle of the Bands.
  • Unreliable Voiceover: Zack's story about his time in the Lumberzacks is not exactly accurate.
  • What Have I Become?: Played for Laughs; Zack has his Jerkass Realization when a band called Reflective Randy and the See What You've Becomes pass by wearing a bunch of mirrors on their clothes.
  • Yoko Oh No: Parodied; in Zack's backstory about how the Lumberzacks broke up, he mentions that "a girl came between us." By this, he means that they were at a store, a girl literally got in line between him and some of his bandmates, and an argument ensued about whether or not she cut in line
