Recap / Milo Murphy's Law S1E15 "The Substitute"

Go To

Milo's science class deals with a bored substitute. Meanwhile, Cavendish and Dakota hide in the classroom's closet to hide a substance that will help pistachios grow.

Tropes:

  • Apathetic Teacher: Ms. Baxter starts as this, since being a substitute means she has no way of knowing for sure if the students learned anything from her.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Milo and Melissa get a moment like this while fighting the blob.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Milo makes baking soda and vinegar catch on fire, something pointed out to be impossible by Ms. Baxter.
  • Bond One-Liner: Milo starts doing his impression of an 80's action star while fighting off the blob, mostly by having every line he says be this trope
  • Chekhov's Classroom: Learning about the 3 phases of matter leads Milo to figure out they can turn the blob into a solid.
  • Continuity Nod: The Klimpaloon from Phineas and Ferb shows up several times for visual gags.
  • Disney Acid Sequence: Ms. Baxter has one after being sucked into a wormhole to space, courtesy of mistaking a time travel device for a cell phone.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Ms. Baxter with unkempt hair, laying back in her seat with sunglasses over her eyes? It's a good thing that other faculty members didn't see her that way. They might have mistaken her for having a hangover.
  • The End... Or Is It?: The episode ends with the slime moving towards the pistachio tree that was accidentally destroyed and it comes to life.
  • Foreshadowing: The Pistachio Plant that merges with the sentient blob, and later evolves into King Pistachion is initially saved by Cavendish and Dakota when they prevent Diogee from peeing on it, in Missing Milo this is exactly how the day is saved.
  • Got Volunteered: Everyone looks at Zack when Milo needs help with a demonstration.
  • Improvised Weapon: The blob's defeated by fire extinguishers.
  • Lampshade Hanging: "May I be excused from this extended physical comedy bit?!"
  • Magic Skirt: Averted, as Ms. Baxter had to hold her's in place when the blob lifted her upside-down.
  • Noodle Incident: The last time Milo said "maybe if I", the National Guard had to be called and Milo got to hold a grenade launcher. No further details are revealed.
  • Plot Allergy: Zach is allergic to the chemical he helps Milo mix into a solution. His sneeze quickly turns into a Sneeze of Doom.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The song playing during Ms. Baxter's trip through space spoofs Space Oddity by David Bowie.
    • Just like the movie The Blob (1958), this episode's blob is defeated by using fire extinguishers to freeze it.
  • Unfortunate Item Swap: Milo accidentally grabs Cavendish and Dakota's fertilizer instead of the chemical absorbent, creating a sentient slime monster. Unlike most examples of this trope, the cans are clearly labeled.
    • To say nothing of the swapping of a time travel device for a teenager's cell phone. It didn't end up well for Ms. Baxter.
