Tommy's powers are in danger of being reclaimed by Rita Repulsa forever, thanks to the Powerdraining Candle, a candle formed from magic wax. When the candle melts completely, Tommy's powers will be infused into Rita's powerful magic forever.

Tropes

  • All for Nothing: Rita's plan to take back the green ranger powers blew up when Tommy transferred them to Jason.
  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: Goldar threatens to not just get the Rangers and Zordon back for this, but also Alpha, as well.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Jason fails to get to the Green Candle before it melts due to a monster attack, making Tommy lose the Green Ranger powers.
  • Behemoth Battle: The Dinozords' rematch with Cyclops.
  • Big Damn Kiss: The first of two in the franchise.
  • Big "NO!": Rita screams this when Jason was given the Green Ranger powers.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Tommy loses his powers, but they're kept from Rita. Tommy and Kimberly also agree to go to the dance together.
  • Call-Back: Jason volunteers to go to the Dark Dimension, saying he's been there before.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Cyclops effortlessly takes on the Dragonzord with Tommy inside, which is why Jason has to give up trying to get the candle.
  • Dark Reprise: A somber version of the instrumental theme is played when Tommy gives Jason his coin.
  • Faux Affably Evil: How Goldar greets Jason's arrival.
"Well, it seems I have a guest. Welcome back, old friend. What an unexpected pleasure."
  • Kick the Dog: Goldar taunts Jason for having to leave to save Tommy without getting the candle.
Goldar: You give up too easily!
  • Modesty Shorts: Tommy lifts Kimberly up high, whilst the latter is wearing a dress.
  • Monster of the Week: Cyclops.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Jason stumbles back in shock when Zordon tells the Rangers that it's too late to retrieve the candle.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Bulk and Skull had not interfered, Jason might have had enough time to get the candle.
  • Put on a Bus: Jason David Frank as Tommy departs here, supposedly for good.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Jason is given the Dragon coin so Rita won't get its powers.
  • Sadistic Choice: Saving Tommy's powers or saving his life.
  • Skewed Priorities: Jason, fearing Tommy will lose his powers, is reluctant to leave the candle intact. When Zack indirectly lampshades this, you can tell there is a hint of What the Hell, Hero? in his voice.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Zyuranger's Green Candle storyline ended slightly worse than this... as in Burai (Tommy's equivalent) dies.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: As Rita is busy breaking down, Goldar does this for a change.
"I'll get them back for this; Zordon, and his Power Rangers, and that talking tin can, too!"
  • Took a Level in Badass: The last time Jason was in the Dark Dimension unmorphed with Goldar, he barely managed to survive the experience. This time, he's able to fight him handily.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Rita has a particularly loud one when she's prevented from claiming the Green Ranger powers.
Rita: NOOOOOO! THEY'VE STOLEN MY POWER! IT WAS MINE! YET ANOTHER OF MY PERFECT PLANS RUINED!
