Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S1E24 The Spit Flower

Go To

At the Youth Center, Ernie tells Kimberly and Tommy that he's out to get some supplies, but they should feel free to keep working on her prized model float for the upcoming peace parade. Kim is so proud to be working on the float, and Tommy says her design definitely deserves to be entered as it's awesome. Who should show up but Bulk and Skull! They walk forward to mock it, and Bulk makes as if he's about to sneeze on it, but Tommy redirects him so that he sneezes on Skull. Remembering his allergies to these flowers, he repeatedly sneezes on and around his buddy and they walk off in humiliation. Rita, disgusted by the float and what it symbolizes, boasts that there will be no world peace as long as she's around. Kim explains to Tommy that this year the flowers will be recycled as potpourri. All of a sudden, the Putties appear and attack the pair, with some of them starting to wreck the model. The two fight back as hard as they can, but they're outnumbered and the float is ripped apart, eventually knocking off it's table. The other four Rangers walk into the scene, and just as they attack the Putties they teleport off. Kim sits on the floor and weeps amongst the strewn flowers; without the model they won't be able to build the full sized float. Trini tries to comfort her but she says that Rita will probably attack any future projects she works on, too. The others offer to help her rebuild this one, but she says there's no time to gather more flowers as the design was due today. Gloating at their petty sabotage, the villains ponder which monster to send forth this time. Rita demands a flower-themed monster from Finster, one which will turn pretty blossoms into ferocious spiders and further rub defeat into Kim. He tells her he has a rare "Flora expectorosis" - or Spit Flower - which will be just the trick. This beast sucks up hundreds of blossoms and spits them back out as evil and ravenous fanged flora which latch on to victims and suck out their life energy. The monster is created and sent down to Earth.

Trini suggests to the others that they should take Kim out to lunch to cheer her up. They gather up all the flowers they can, but there aren't that many which sucks for them. Tommy has an idea to gather more, but they'll take care of it later as he has to leave. He goes up to a morose Kim sitting at the bar and tells her about lunch, checking she's alright. He tells her he has a plan but will tell her about it later, and offers to drop the remaining flowers off at her house. She refuses though, asking him to junk it as she doesn't want the bad memory around. He heads off and Jason asserts that they'll show Rita it's not that easy to defeat the Power Rangers. Zordon hails him, summoning them to the Command Center. Kim joins them after a moment's hesitation. At headquarters, Zordon tells them that Rita wants to destroy the entire peace parade and all of it's floats using the Spit Flower. Kim sees that nobody will be safe with the fanged flowers around, and Zordon states that world peace will be dealt another blow by this threat. The Spit Flower's body is like armor with few weak spots, and his own claws and fangs are also dangerous. The Rangers mobilize against it but it immediately deploys the flowers, covering their suits and gnawing at them. The Spit Flower blasts them to the ground and they feel themselves growing weaker by the second. They force themselves to their feet however and trade blows with the monster. Rita grows the Spit Flower and the Rangers furiously try to pull the hazards off their suits, but the giant follows up with another blast of energy. At Tommy's place, we see him work on something just off-camera. But Zordon summons him for backup and he unleashes a mighty burst, knocking Spit Flower back just before it crushes his comrades. Spit Flower inhales tons of air, sucking thousands of flowers into his snout. Jason tells Tommy to engage the Dragonzord, and Zack, Trini and Billy summon their Zords too. Jason orders the mecha to form Dragonzord in Battle Mode, and all Rangers except Tommy leap into the cockpit to bring the fight to Spit Flower.

The drill lance revs up superfast and the two giants do battle. Amazingly, Spit Flower is able to catch the lance in its claw and lands a kick on the Dragonzord. Eventually it spews an assortment of flowers on the mecha and explosions rip around it. Zordon tells Alpha to recall the Rangers so as to regroup, retire the Zords, and also to track the Spit Flower. The monster, normal-sized again, continues to suck up flowers and build its strength, weaponizing them all over town. Alpha conducts an analysis of the battle. We see Bulk and Skull threatened by the gnawing flowers and chased by Spit Flower. They pratfall and react with terror at the blossom's fangs, soon passing out. Zordon declares that the battle analysis has flagged up Spit Flower's weakness: destroy the mist sac and the flowers can't be spat out any more, draining its strength. Kim is confident she can hit it with her Power Bow. Tommy is told to stay behind as a last resort measure in case the others fail. Kim easily shoots down the sac and they bring the weapons together for the Power Blaster. They blast Spit Flower with it and it is vanquished at last. Alpha celebrates, but Tommy asks him for assistance back at the garage. They operate on the off-screen project, despite Alpha getting his hand stuck to the superglue. Rita is upset, taking her monster's failure out on her underlings as usual. At the Youth Center, Jason and Zack spar, talking about the day's close fought battle. Ernie then calls them over for the parade's televised broadcast for which Billy is wearing binoculars in a silly manner. Tommy and Kim show up, and she's not keen to be watching the parade, but he tells her to go ahead anyway. The camera zooms in on Kim's reconstructed float and she's delightfully surprised to learn about Tommy's efforts to fix it, hugging him. The two class clowns come around the corner, nursing their flower inflicted wounds. Skull asks Kim for a hug too, but Tommy tells them to just buzz off. Zack pulls his "the hand is faster than the eye" routine, conjuring up a bouquet like a magician. This time, both have a big allergic sneezing fit and Ernie and the team laugh them off.

Tropes

  • Attack Its Weak Point: The Spit Flower's weak point is its mist sack right blow the neck, which appropriately, is the right place for Kimberly to hit it.
  • Behemoth Battle: Dinozords vs. Spit Flower.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Tommy once again shows us how badass he is by zapping a fully grown Spit Flower on its butt... with just a blast from the Dragon Dagger.
  • Canis Latinicus: According to Finster, the Spit Flower's scientific name is Flora expectorosis.
  • Ditzy Genius: Alpha apparently doesn't know what glue is and as a result gets a bottle of the stuff stuck to his hand.
  • Evil Is Petty: Rita attacks Kimberly's float out of pure spite.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The Spit Flower spits flowers.
  • Foul Flower: The biting bloomers that Spit Flower... spits out... which can latch onto people with their sharp teeth.
  • Garden of Evil: The Spit Flower can turn any harmless little plant into a toothy gnawing monster, or as Alpha puts it, "Dangerous daisies!"
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: Skull declares this to Bulk as they're attacked by the fanged flowers, but he soon catches up with him anyway.
  • Kick the Dog: Given Kim's reaction, Rita ordering the Putties to wreck the float model is nothing less than this. Squatt even mocks her with "Poor Kimberly!"
    • The Dog Bites Back: Kimberly got back, by defeating the Spit Flower with her Power Bow. Well, sort of. He's weakened enough that he can't make more biting bloomers and can be taken down by the Power Blaster (although it took three shots to do so when normally it takes one).
  • Make My Monster Grow: Done by Rita to Spit Flower.
  • Monster of the Week: The Spit Flower.
  • Plant Aliens / Plant Person / Botanical Abomination: The Spit Flower is one ferocious flower.
  • Ship Tease: The first episode since Tommy's redemption to feature him and Kim working alone on a project together, enjoying their company. Also witness the sheer ferocity with which he fights to defend her float, and the tender way he comforts her after; it's clear he really cares for the project, and for her.
  • Silent Antagonist: The Spit Flower never says a word, only growls and laughs.
  • Why Won't You Die?: The Spit Flower needs three blasts from the Power Blaster to finally go down, even after being weakened by Kim's arrows.
  • Witch with a Capital "B": Jason's sad reaction to Kim's plight: "That Rita is a real witch."
  • The Worf Effect: The Spit Flower proves to be a match even for the Dragonzord Fighting Mode, which was able to easily annihilate Spidertron in the previous episode. Subverted when Spit Flower itself plays Worf to Kim's bow, like several monsters before it.
