Go To

The fifth story of Memory Records Volume 5. It was released on October 19th, 2019.

Summary

In a building, tulpas are cutting down several people who just scream in horror. The one who commands these beings is Jatice who went on an unauthorized mission to kill members of Researchers of Divine Wisdom. He reveals to the leader he knows he is part of the Researchers of Divine Wisdom and the one creating Angel Dust. Jatice without mercy kills everyone including the ones who weren't a part of the organization.

Back at the headquarters of the Imperial Court Mages, Jatice walks through the building and sees Glenn Radars being admonished by his superior, Mikael, for defying orders. Seeing this Jatice wonders why Glenn always manages to subvert his expectations and keep surviving his missions including the vampire hunt a few months before. Jatice then interferes with their 'talk' and takes Glenn with him to their boss.

In the office. Eve reads reports about them. Jatice's report says he was able to stop the flow of drug trade and bring a huge blow against the Researchers of Divine Wisdom, but he killed everyone there. while Glenn's reports say that on his mission he defied orders from his superior, Mikael, but was able to save several hostages and kill the high-ranking criminal. Although angry at their behavior she then sends the two of them on a mission together.

Glenn and Jatice arrive at the institute and meet up with Zepal Dilek and the person they are tasked with guarding his daughter, Neige Dilek. Glenn starts guarding Neige for 24 hours a day and shows great care for her during that time. While Jatice watched them and looked throughout the institute. During one of Neige's medical checkups, Jatice asks Glenn about the suspicious parts of their missions, but they both fall unconscious.

Glenn and Jatice are then taken to an underground chamber. Standing beside them is Dilek who's happy that the virus he infected them with is working and that it shall raise his rank among the Researchers of Divine Wisdom. He then orders Neige to kill them since she controls the virus infecting them in exchange for curing her, but she's unable to follow the order since Glenn was very kind to her. Dilek then tries to punish his daughter for disobedience, but then suddenly Jatice reveals that he knew something was up and kills everyone except Neige.

Glenn then also wakes up and Jatice explains what's going on including that they are both infected with a virus that will kill them soon unless they kill Neige, the holder of the original virus. Glenn is unwilling to sacrifice Neige since she's just an unwitting pawn in her father's plan and someone he can save. Jatice impressed by his resolve reveals that there is a way to save Neige and themselves without killing her. There is a cure for the virus which they can give to her, but it's mixed up with 99 identical bottles filled with poisons. After a bit of thinking Glenn picks up one bottle and injects it.. into himself! But cures it once it turns out to be a poison. He continues despite the pain and Neige's objections, but is stopped by Jatice who tells him he passed his test, and as a reward, he finds the bottle for him.

With their mission over, it was revealed that the institute had ties with the Researchers of Divine Wisdom. Neige was also arrested, but is allowed to go once it's clear she was only used by her father. Glenn's and Jatice's reputations in the military grew.

In a mansion somewhere in the empire. Jatice has Mikael bound and gagged. He reveals that he knows that Mikael is a member of the Researchers of Divine Wisdom and purposely sends Glenn on dangerous missions to get him killed. Jatice then kills him to repay his debt to Glenn.

This side story contains examples of:

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: This is the reason why the poison doesn't instantly kill Glenn since every Imperial Court Mage is trained to be resistant to them.
  • Axe-Crazy: This side story shows that Jatice was already insane before turning against Alzano.
  • Call-Forward: Glenn and Jatice always had feelings they would fight each other one day, because of their opposing ideals and justice.
  • Continuity Nod: When Jatice thinks about the missions Glenn survived despite the odds he also thinks of the incident with the vampire.
  • Guilt by Association: Jatice considers people evil even if they are just forced to partake or are just connected to them without knowing their true allegiance.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: Glenn is forced to find the cure for Neige out of 100 identical bottles.
  • Take a Third Option: Glenn has to choose a bottle to inject into Neige and he decides to inject it... into himself. But cures himself once it turns out to be a poison. He considered this the best way to save her without harm and increase his chances. Although eventually, it will kill him unless he succeeds in finding the cure.
