Recap / Maya And The Three Chapter 7 The Divine Gate

Go To

Maya and the Three cross the Divine Gate into the underworld, where they're joined by Zatz who, along with his father Camazotz, have decided to throw their lot with Maya. Killing the God of War, however, is not such an easy task.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Rico, Chimi and Picchu when Mictlan takes control of and forces them to try and kill Maya.
  • Children Are Innocent: As Lady Micte and Lord Mictlan discuss Maya being raised as a Human Sacrifice in the cold open, Baby Maya is happily babbling and blissfully unaware of the impending danger.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Sure, Lord Mictlan isn't threatened by five teenagers and another god challenging him, but that doesn't mean he's going to give them even a small chance at winning. He takes Zatz out of the fight right off the bat, and forces Maya to fight her friends by mind-controlling Rico, Chimi, and Picchu into attacking her.
  • Exact Words: Lord Mictlan assures Maya that ‘’he’’ didn't harm her brothers. Instead he brainwashed the entire Teca army into doing it for him, and demonstrates this by doing the same to Maya's friends.
  • Forced to Watch: Zatz can do nothing but watch and cry out in horror as Mictlan tears out his father's heart and consumes it right in front of him.
  • Handshake Refusal: A variant. Ah Puch hugs Chimi, Rico, and Picchu, so Maya opens her arms fully expecting to receive a hug like her friends did. Instead, Ah Puch pushes Maya's arms away and starts scolding her for coming half-cocked into the underworld.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After seven episodes of Lady Micte acting as her brutal husband’s yes man, she finally turns against him by flying Maya and co to safety.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Picchu holds off Mictlan and the other gods to let his friends escape at the cost of his own life.
  • Kick the Dog: As if Xtabay couldn’t sink any lower, here she impersonates Mictlan’s victims, Acat and the Jaguar Brothers, pleading to him for mercy.
    • Mictlan himself laughing hysterically at it.
  • Mama Bear: A more passive example for Micte, but she helps orchestrate Maya and co’s escape by giving Chimi the weapon to stab Mictlan with, undoing Maya’s bonds, distracting Mictlan, and pointing them to their exit.
  • No-Sell: Not only is Mictlan completely unfazed by Maya challenging him, he mocks her for it before demonstrating his powers to her.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Ah Puch calls Maya out for risking her life and the lives of her friends by coming into the underworld with no plan, but instead "only vengeance and arrogance".
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Lord Mictlan tries to devalue Picchu staying behind to destroy the Divine Gate by pointing out that he can build a new gate to the world of the living within a fortnight. Picchu smiles and retorts that he bought his friends time to get away and prepare to fight another day.
  • Shipper on Deck: Rico starts singing the old "sitting in a tree" song when Zatz expresses his concern for Maya. Chimi smacks him on the head, but then she and Picchu join in on the shipping by smiling at the two of them.
  • Take Me Instead: Zatz tearfully begs Lord Mictlan to sacrifice him instead of Maya, as he's a demigod too and his heart will make Lord Mictlan more powerful. Mictlan ignores him.
  • Would You Like to Hear How They Died?: Lord Mictlan tells Maya that he didn't kill her brothers; their own comrades did. He then offers to show her exactly how that happened, so he mind rapes Rico, Chimi, and Picchu into attacking her.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The group's escape from Lord Mictlan's palace would have been considerably easier had Zatz and Rico been in fighting shape:
    • Zatz is a Semi-Divine Magic Knight who's Immune to Mind Control and armed with a weapon that, like Camazotz's sword, can hurt Lord Mictlan. He's the first to be taken out of the fight by Lord Mictlan, who specifically sends his snakes to bind and paralyze him. The snakes' venom weakens him to the point that he needs to be carried to safety by Picchu and can't help during their escape.
    • Rico is probably the heaviest hitter of the group and able to fight off Lord Mictlan's control by sheer willpower. He's knocked out when the other gods attack them immediately after Lord Mictlan falls into the lava, and thus can't protect his friends from Chivo, Hura, and Can, all of whom use long-range attacks. He only comes to when they're near the stairway leading to the Gate.
