Recap / M*A*S*H S5 E24: Margaret's Marriage

Go To

After Frank taunts Margaret one time too many about the length of her engagement to Donald, she calls him up and demands they move the wedding forward. He agrees, and "rewards" Frank by making him best man.

Attention, all personnel! The following tropes are registered to attend Major Houlihan's wedding:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Everyone in attendance at the bachelor party for Colonel Penobscot gets addled in the brain from too much drink.
Hawkeye: I recognise the drunk from Indiana.
  • Altar the Speed: Father Mulcahy has an entire sermon about marriage planned before Margaret's wedding, but incoming wounded force him to cut that short and then speed through the wedding vows.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After chasing Frank down and tackling him with everyone thinking he plans to beat Frank up, Donald instead asks Frank to be the best man.
  • Bloodsplattered Wedding Dress: Margaret is forced to attend surgery in the OR in her wedding gown.
  • Call-Back: Father Mulcahy's repeated drunken use of "jocularity" is one to the Father Mulcahy Soundalike Contest in "Movie Tonight".
  • Description Cut: Hawkeye and B.J. decide to prank Donald by putting him in a body cast from his chest to his feet, claiming he broke his leg during his bachelor party. Cut to Donald wearing just that at the wedding the next morning.
  • Gone Horribly Right: From Frank's perspective. His attempt to discourage Margaret by suggesting Donald isn't going to commit prompts him to marry Margaret right away... while Frank watches.
  • Hereditary Wedding Dress: Margaret's dress is a gift from Kilnger; who inherited it from his uncle, who had used it to get out of his own military service in World War II.
  • Karma Houdini: B.J. and Hawkeye completely get away with their broken leg prank. They try to tell Margaret about it at the last minute but she can't hear them over the chopper.
  • Laughing Mad: Frank's reaction to Donald asking him to be the best man at the wedding.
  • Long List: Radar rattles off all the forms needed to fill out before they can hold the wedding.
  • MST: While watching Margaret and Donald talk after the latter's arrival, Hawkeye and B.J. add their own dialogue.
  • Noodle Incident: The other bachelor party Father Mulcahy had been to.
Father Mulcahy: A nun jumped out of an angel-food cake!
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Frank panics when Margaret mentions him by name over the phone to Donald and after he learns Donald will be coming to the 4077th immediately. In response, Frank implores Colonel Potter to grant him temporary leave.
Frank: Sir. Request permission for two weeks' furlough.
Col. Potter: [without looking up] No.
      Frank: [whimpers] Oh, golly.
    • Later, when Donald tells Frank in person that he wants to talk to him, Frank runs like hell.
  • Shout-Out: The opening has Hawkeye (because who else?) talk about Gertrude Stein's relationship with Alice B. Toklas.
  • Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace: Played with; at the line in question, everyone present turns to Frank, but he demurs.
  • Think Unsexy Thoughts: Colonel Potter, Hawkeye and BJ are staying up with Frank for moral support. After awhile, they begin talking about Margaret and Donald most likely making their way to their honeymoon suite and then Frank gets up to leave. When they ask where he's going, he replies that he has a sudden need to take a cold shower. After a moment, the other three decide to join him.
  • Too Much Information: When Colonel Potter asks Radar if the upcoming wedding will be the first marriage ceremony he's attended, Radar relays a story where he attended his Uncle Ernie's, making a point about all the food made for it. Then he makes one more statement that turns Potter off.
Radar: I threw up all over the flower girl.
Col. Potter: That will be all.
