Recap / M*A*S*H S5 E13: Hawk's Nightmare

Go To

The parade of young patients through the OR prompts Hawkeye to start sleepwalking and having nightmares about his childhood friends in Crabapple Cove suffering fatal accidents.

Attention all personnel! Hawkeye is dreaming about the following tropes:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Sidney tells Hawkeye the nightmares won't go away, and we see later they haven't, plus Hawkeye's lack of sanity becomes a known thing from this episode, but he can deal and stay asleep for now.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Hawkeye, complete with yelling that wakes Frank and Potter.
  • Child Soldiers: The young age of the wounded disturbs Hawkeye.
Hawkeye: Look at them. They're babies.
Frank: What are you talking about?
Hawkeye: The patients, Frank, look at their faces. They couldn't ante up a whisker between them.
  • Comforting Comforter: BJ pulls a blanket over Hawkeye before going to bed himself.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Radar inadvertently gains the nickname "Stinky" courtesy of one of Hawkeye's dreams. He chooses it over dream-him's given name of "Dexter", figuring it has more pizazz.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Hawkeye's reaction to Sidney:
Hawkeye: And they tell me I've been playing a mean game of zombie basketball.
Sidney: They tell me you've been worrying about losing your marbles.
    Hawkeye: Ah, very good. applauds
Sidney: For my next trick I'll invent sibling rivalry.
  • Never Sleep Again: The dreams and sleepwalking leave Hawkeye afraid to go to sleep and desperate to find things to keep him occupied.
  • Never Wake Up a Sleepwalker: Briefly lampshaded by Klinger before he and Radar herd Hawkeye back to bed.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: Klinger's assumption in The Tag is that Hawkeye is faking insanity to get out of the army as well.
  • Shout-Out: To Norman Rockwell and Winnie the Pooh.
  • Skewed Priorities: Hawkeye calls Toby Wilder to tell him about the dream he had; Toby's only concern is money he claims Hawkeye owes him.
  • Sleepwalking: Hawkeye sleepwalks after some rough OR surgeries, imagining he is back in Crabapple Cove as a child.
  • Why Didn't I Think of That?: Klinger admires what he thinks is Hawkeye's own Section 8 scheme and wishes he'd thought of it himself.
