Recap / M*A*S*H S11 E10: U.N., the Night and the Music

Go To

Three U.N. delegates visit the 4077th, and Margaret becomes attracted to one of them. B.J. has to deal with a wounded soldier whose leg he has to amputate.

Attention all personnel! Captain Lal suggests meditating on the following tropes:

  • Amputation Stops Spread: B.J. ends up having to amputate the leg to keep gangrene from spreading to the rest of Lumley's body.
  • And This Is for...: At the end, when the U.N. delegates have left, Margaret hits Hawkeye in the shoulder, and says, "Thanks for trying to be a jerk," indicating she understands why he was trying to keep her and Johannsen apart.
  • The Driver: Dr. Kent reveals he's actually a chauffeur for a rich family.
  • Got Me Doing It: A non-verbal example - while Hawkeye had been resistant to Captain Lal's mediation techniques (which involve doing a headstand and chanting), when Dr. Kent reveals his true profession to Winchester (see The Driver above), we see Hawkeye is now doing a headstand, and laughing so hard that he falls over.
  • I Am Very British: Dr. Kent maintains an upper-crust British accent when talking with Winchester, until he reveals himself, after which he slips into a Cockney accent, which is apparently his normal voice.
  • It Amused Me: Dr. Kent admits he pretended to be a cultured snob for Winchester's sake because he saw how much Winchester secretly enjoyed being insulted by someone acting even more of a snob than him.
  • Just Friends: When Johannsen approaches Hawkeye and asks about the Belligerent Sexual Tension between him and Margaret (or, while Johannsen doesn't know this, the remnants of it), Hawkeye assures Johannsen he and Margaret are just good friends.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: Johannsen reveals to Hawkeye this is why he's reluctant to be with Margaret, because a recent wound left him impotent. Hawkeye decides to interrupt Johannsen and Margaret whenever possible, to Margaret's fury. Finally, Johannsen reveals the truth to Margaret, she apologizes to him, and the two of them spend the night without sleeping together.
  • Mood Whiplash: Between the light-hearted nature of the subplot involving Captain Lal teaching Klinger and Col. Potter to meditate, the ultimate hilarity of Dr. Kent's subplot, the ultimately heartwarming nature of Johannsen's subplot, and the heartbreak of B.J. dealing with having to amputate Lumley's leg.
  • Only Sane Man: Hawkeye feels this way about himself, what with having to listen to Dr. Kent and Winchester out-snob each other, trying to keep Johannsen and Margaret apart, and seeing Klinger and Col. Potter embrace Captain Lal's meditation techniques.
Hawkeye: Why fight it? I might as well go crazy and be inconspicuous.
  • Shown Their Work: The chant Captain Lal, Klinger and Col. Potter are doing while standing on their heads is an actual Buddhist chant.
  • Titled After the Song: The song "You and the Night and the Music".
