Recap / M*A*S*H S10 E1: That's Showbiz

Go To

A traveling USO troupe comes to the unit when one of them, Marina (Gail Edwards), ends up being a patient, and the troupe ends up entertaining the unit.

Attention all personnel! Fast Freddie would like to use the following tropes for his act:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Despite the fact he thinks Freddie's jokes are dumb, Charles admits he can't help but laugh at them.
  • Break the Haughty: Once again, Charles - he's dismissive of Ellie's talents, until she reveals she went to Juilliard and can play all of the classical music that he loves. She just can't make a living at it, which is why she's in the USO troupe in the first place.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: Averted — while Marina does fall in love with Hawkeye after he operates on her, Hawkeye, usually The Casanova, gently turns her down.
  • Hurricane of Puns: Freddie's preferred brand of comedy, and it turns out to be Klinger's brand of comedy as well.
  • Ruptured Appendix: Marina suffering from this is what kicks the plot of the episode into motion.
  • Shout-Out: Freddie is in a hurry to leave the 4077th because he has the act booked on The Toast of the Town, which was the original version of The Ed Sullivan Show.
  • Stealth Pun: When calling the 8063rd to help out Sarah, Father Mulcahy speaks with the company chaplain there, whom he calls by his first name, "Charlie."
  • The Tag: Hawkeye and B.J. agree to let Klinger into the swamp on the condition he doesn't tell any more dumb jokes, which Klinger agrees to. Instead, he starts playing an accordion.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Sarah, one of the troupe members, tries to get a pair of ballet shoes belonging to her dead brother, (killed in combat). They were a gift from her brother's fiancĂ©e.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Between Col. Potter and Brandy. He ends up falling asleep in his tent before they do anything about it.
  • Wrote the Book: Hawkeye jokes about this when assuring Marina.
Capt. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce: That's right up my alley, I wrote the book on the appendix. I even wrote the appendix, but they took that out.
