Recap / Martha Speaks S 5 E 2 Dinosaurs In Trouble

Go To

Helen, T.D., and Martha are trying to have a cloud-counting contest, only there aren't any. Truman and Milo run past, and T.D. wonders where they're going. Helen figures out that it's the museum, since apparently the two of them have been going there to look at fossils every evening. T.D. wants to come along, and Martha wants to come to see what all the fuss is about, leaving Helen alone.

At the museum, the boys enthuse about the fossils, but Martha's more interested in the bone fossils as food, and she and T.D. annoy Truman and Milo by being clueless about dinosaurs. They then run into a man who reveals that the fossil room is being closed down due to lack of funds. Truman and Milo are very unhappy at this, but Martha is confident that the museum will get money. Truman then decides that he, the other boys, and Martha will fund the museum. However, they don't know how.

On the sidewalk, Truman and Milo decide to make a dinosaur exhibit to get other people as excited as they are. T.D. thinks this is a great idea, but he decides to have the show involve dinosaurs doing exciting, but anachronistic things such as playing hockey. However, Truman and Milo fear this will make the show backfire, since they feel he'd portray dinosaurs as too "goofy" to take seriously. They consider excluding T.D. from the project, but Martha fears that'd hurt his feelings. Truman decides that they'd do it in a way that T.D. doesn't know.

Later, the boys start coming up with ideas for their show. Truman and Milo get T.D. out of the way by telling him to build one of his ideas (a dinosaur on a skateboard), while they start making various artworks. T.D. decides to give up, but he has other ideas instead, which to his guy friends' dismay, all involve dinosaurs doing anachronistic things. Milo then tells T.D. to meet him and Truman at the museum at two o'clock, then he and Truman pretend to forget.

Later, Martha comes over and finds out what Truman and Milo did, and she tells them off, right when T.D. is coming back, thinking that Truman and Milo have a problem. T.D. hears it all and tells Truman and Milo that he gives up, but he pretends he's just too busy. He then goes into his treehouse and sulks. Martha tells Helen about the situation and Helen tries to cheer T.D. up by throwing at least two card games, but it doesn't work. Then, T.D. decides he will do his own exhibit, and Helen, Martha, and Jake offer to join in.

When the exhibits are done, both Truman and Milo and T.D., Martha, and the Lorraine siblings present their exhibits, but Truman and Milo worry that T.D. plagiarised them. However, when Milo sees that it's very factually inaccurate, they decide he didn't. Milo fears that the customers would ignore his and Truman's exhibit in favour of the other one, but Truman assures him that they won't due to his and Milo's perceived intelligence.

Both groups start their exhibits, and both exhibits prove popular, but the people running them argue over whose is better. Afterwards, the boys (who sound very hoarse because they're dehydrated) blame each other for hindering their ability to make money, but the museum guy reveals that they made a lot of money and states that if they did it every weekend, they'd soon be able to reopen the dinosaur room.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: T.D. draws a dinosaur in a cap.
  • All Animals Are Dogs: Discussed when Martha wonders if T. Rexes chased their tails. The boys are offended at this idea.
  • Artistic License – Paleontology: Discussed when T.D. wants to depict dinosaurs doing things like playing sports, but Truman and Milo think that's ridiculous.
  • Asian and Nerdy: Milo (who seems to be Asian or at least part-Asian judging by his appearance and his last name) geeks out about the fossils at the museum.
  • Buffy Speak: T.D. titles his (and Helen's and Martha's and Jake's) show Dinosaurs and Action and Stuff.
  • Closer to Earth: The female characters (Helen and Martha) are the only two not to make petty accusations during the exhibits.
  • Continuity Nod: T.D. holds up his Paleontologist comic from "Puppy Skits" up and claims he used it for "research".
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Martha says during her show, "What's more fun than fun? Nothing! Fun is fun!".
  • Faux Horrific:
    • When Martha suggests that South Pole dinosaurs played hockey, Milo grabs his ears and exclaims, "Ahh! I don't want this in my ears!".
    • Milo again, when he learns that the fossil room is being closed down, he kneels on the floor, throws his arms up, and yells, "Life without fossils has no meaning! Why should the sun bother to rise!?".
    • Milo again yells, "I can't look!" and takes off his glasses so he won't see when T.D. shows ideas for the exhibit that have dinosaurs doing unrealistic things.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: T.D.'s excuse for dropping out of the museum project is that he needs to untie his old shoelaces.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Truman describes himself and Milo as "calm", before they both jump in the air and yelp when T.D. walks up.
  • Insufferable Genius: Downplayed when Truman and Milo are a bit rude to T.D. for portraying dinosaurs inaccurately.
  • Kids Love Dinosaurs: The boys love looking at fossils, including that of a T. Rex, who they describe as "majestic and proud".
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: The paleontologist on T.D.'s comic wears a lab coat.
  • Let's Put on a Show!: The boys and Martha try to raise money for the museum by putting on a dinosaur show to get people excited. Then, T.D. and Martha give up and decide to make a separate exhibit with Helen and Jake.
  • Mondegreen Gag: When the museum guy says that he and the others don't have enough funds to run the fossil room, Milo thinks he's saying he doesn't have enough fun.
  • Only Sane Man: Martha acts as the voice of reason in this episode, pointing out that T.D.'s plan involving going to space would take too long, and that Truman and Milo were being mean in abandoning T.D. and lying to him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Martha thinks that T.D. must be in a very bad funk if winning a game didn't cheer him up. Helen agrees, and even claims it's like T.D.'s been replaced by a "very droopy, sad alien".
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Milo describes the museum as the "best museum in town". T.D. reminds him that it's the only museum in town.
  • Placebo Eureka Moment: Truman thanks Martha for coming up with the idea of funding the museum, but she didn't say
that; she just said that the museum would eventually get more money.
  • Plagiarism in Fiction: Discussed when Truman and Milo worry that T.D. copied their work for his exhibit.
  • Rule of Cool: Conversed. T.D. wants to portray dinosaurs as doing unrealistic things like playing sports and dancing, since he feels those are exciting and attention-grabbing. His guy friends do not agree.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Exploited when T.D. tries to make himself seem smart by saying that he "researched" his exhibit with a comic book with the word "paleontologist" on the front cover.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Martha wants to eat the bone fossils.
  • Voodoo Shark: When the boys and Martha wonder how they'll fund the museum, T.D. comes up with an answer: become astronauts and find an asteroid made of millions of silver dollars. Martha points out that this only raises the question of how long that would take.
