Recap / Mao Mao S 1 E 27 Flyaway

Go To

When Adorabat has to go to the dentist due to her tooth hurting, she is scared of going to the dentist, so Mao Mao teaches her a meditation technique to calm her nerves, but when Mao Mao and Badgerclops argue, they don't even realize that Adorabat is still meditating, and her spirit transcends out her body, and at first, Adorabat enjoys it, refusing to go back to her body as she still fears the dentist. When Adorabat ends up going to the Astral Plane where Meditatin' Melvin resides, Adorabat witnesses Mao Mao and Badgerclops trying to bring her back and begins to realize that by going to the Astral Plane to avoid the things she doesn’t like, it is also causing her to miss out on the things she likes.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Adorabat finally goes to the dentist, and he turns out to not be that scary. But the giant drill he uses is.
  • Black Comedy Burst: We briefly see Melvin's body years after he abandoned it. It's not a pretty sight.
  • Brick Joke: Back in the second episode, Badgerclops complained that the bag with Mao Mao and Adorabat was heavy. Apparently, she wasn't joking when she talked about her bone density.
  • Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp": Piñatas are referred to as "papier mache effigies" in the show's world.
  • The Dentist Episode: The main conflict is started by Adorabat's fear of the dentist.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Meditatin' Melvin has been alone in the Astral Plane so long, it's clearly affected his sanity.
Melvin: LONELINESS IS MY ONLY FRIEND!
  • Ironic Echo Cut: Mao Mao filled the piñata with what he thinks are Adorabat's favorite things, incendiary bombs and bugs. Badgerclops says there is no way those are her favorite things; meanwhile, up in the Astral Plane, Adorabat mentions that those are her favorite things.
  • Properly Paranoid: Turns out that Adorabat has every right to be scared of the dentist. Too bad Mao Mao and Badgerclops don't care.
  • The Tooth Hurts: Apparently fundamental to Melvin's particular brand of astral meditation. In fact, he went to the Astral Plane and stayed there because he wanted to avoid the dentist. As it turns out, in his absence things only got worse, as when he gets back:
Melvin: AAAAAGH! Oh, my teeth! They're all soft!
