Iroha: The Beginning

Episode 1: The Small Kyubey

Ever since she visited Kamihama City, Iroha Tamaki has been having repetitive dreams of a younger pink-haired girl in a hospital room. Most other details were largely vague, but Iroha nonetheless felt as though she had seen that girl before. Therefore, Iroha decided to return to the city to get to the bottom of her dreams and understand what this unknown girl means to her. Initially, she thought she could start by hunting for Witches like any Magical Girl would, but while noting that there were many traces of Familiar and Witch magic, she senses a Witch very quickly. She decides to try defeating it before her mother gets upset about Iroha returning home too late.

When Iroha enters the Labyrinth, she comes across another Magical Girl who was having trouble fighting the Familiars. They decide to escape the Labyrinth, where the Magical Girl thanks Iroha for saving her, and warns her to leave Kamihama when Iroha comments about the unusual strength of the Familiars in the city. Iroha refuses the warning and thanks her for her concern, before asking about a Kyubey that was unusually small and baby-like. The girl notes that she had seen it before, and that it was the only Kyubey that was in Kamihama recently. In fact, she may have seen it inside the Labyrinth they just fled. Iroha thanks the girl for her information, and leaves to find the Labyrinth again.

As Iroha tracks the Witch's magical pattern, she notes that the people in its current location were mostly absent now. She finds the "Lil' Kyubey" almost immediately after falling inside the Labyrinth, and is surprised that it was approaching her instead of acting skittish. Suddenly, Iroha is ambushed by a large group of Familiars. Although she tries to fend them off, they began to overwhelm her. She was beaten unconscious as she attempted to run away, but as she drifted to sleep, she barely sees glimpses of the "Lil' Kyubey" as well as a blue-haired Magical Girl in a blue dress who says: "You don't belong here."

Episode 2: Kamihama Magical Girls

Iroha wakes up after having another vision of the little girl in the hospital room, and sees a taller girl with a blonde ponytail. She introduces herself as a magical girl, and asks Iroha if she's feeling alright. She notes that if Iroha was going to prevent herself from being beaten up by Familiars, they need to take her to the "Coordinator," someone that every Magical Girl in Kamihama knew about, and was capable of enhancing their magic power. Iroha initially refuses the offer, before agreeing with the girl that she had nothing to lose. As they move forward, the tall Magical Girl introduces herself as Momoko Togame, though she suggests that they skip the formalities by having Iroha refer to her as Momoko.

They arrive at an abandoned house, where the Coordinator is safe inside because Witches and Familiars that she is too weak to protect herself from don't tend to approach empty buildings. They head inside, and find a Magical Girl who jokingly greets Momoko before noticing that she never met Iroha before. She introduces herself as Mitama Yakumo, and Momoko asks her to "align" Iroha's Soul Gem, offering to pay for her. Mitama then explains to Iroha that by aligning her Soul Gem, she means to reach into it and infuse it with another type of magic, or to bring out a hidden potential. At first, she starts by asking Iroha to remove her clothes for the procedure, but Momoko scolds her for teasing Iroha. Instead, Mitama has Iroha relax and take a deep breath, before touching her Soul Gem. Almost immediately, Iroha has another vision of the girl in the hospital, only this time it felt much more defined. While she still couldn't hear what she was saying she felt that she met this girl before, she felt as though she had seen her before and was confused about the nostalgic affection she felt towards her.

Iroha then wakes up feeling much better, but Mitama points out that when looking into Iroha's Soul Gem. She asks Iroha about the wish she made with Kyubey to become a Magical Girl, but she realizes that she doesn't remember what it was. In fact, it actually hurt for her to focus enough to understand it had to do with the girl in her visions. Feeling desperate, Iroha tries to rush out to find the small Kyubey that caused her to have the visions when she first saw it. Momoko insists that Iroha stay or else "she'll definitely find you." Eventually Iroha runs into the blue-haired Magical Girl from earlier, who figures out that Iroha was with Momoko.

She tells Iroha to stop moving, insisting that she had to defeat her to move forward. When asked why, the Magical Girl reminds her of her earlier incident against the Familiars in that Labyrinth. Since Iroha remembers seeing her before, she cuts to the chase by claiming that she will chase Iroha out of Kamihama. Iroha rebukes that she's been to the Coordinator, but the Magical Girl transforms to fight her anyway, noting how stubborn Iroha was despite looking so timid. Momoko eventually catches up to them, calling out the Magical Girl, who she refers to as Yachiyo, for trying to stop other Magical Girls from fighting Witches for their Grief Seeds. Yachiyo insists that this was a misunderstanding, but negotiates that Iroha can defeat the Witch whose Labyrinth the small Kyubey is in before Yachiyo could. Iroha and Momoko accept this agreement and head off to look for it.

Episode 3: The Girl in My Dream

Iroha and Momoko find and enter the Labyrinth, while Yachiyo waits behind to give them a headstart. On their way to the Witch living at the center of the Labyrinth, Iroha spots the Lil' Kyubey and wants to go after it, but Momoko points out that they need to deal with the Witch first if Iroha wants to stay in Kamihama. Suddenly, the Kyubey behaved in a way suggesting it wanted to take them to the Witch itself. They decide to take their chances with the Kyubey rather than try to compete with Yachiyo. As soon as they enter the Labyrinth, the Sandbox Witch ambushed them and struck Iroha. Yachiyo then appeared and knocked into a daze. Yachiyo then decided to give Iroha another chance by having her defeat the Witch alone. Iroha agrees, and asks Momoko to watch over the Lil' Kyubey for her. Iroha defeats the Sandbox Witch, leaving Momoko and Iroha cheerful. Yachiyo admitted Iroha would have been able to do it, saying she had some sense of what Iroha could do. Then she explained that she planned this as a way to get closer to the Kyubey, which she saw as a dangerous anomaly for still being in Kamihama while regular-sized Kyubeys went elsewhere. Yachiyo quickly ran past Momoko and tried to destroy the Lil' Kyubey. After they struggled, the Kyubey ended up in Iroha's hands, and she almost immediately passed out again. She has another vision, except it was so vivid she can hear the small girl call her "Sis" and speak about wanting to go to school with her after getting better. Iroha realizes that the person she was looking for was her younger sister, Ui Tamaki. Iroha had wished for Ui to be cured of her illness as she was on the brink of death, begging to Kyubey that she would do anything for him. She then wakes up in the Coordinator's room, where she explains what she remembered to Momoko and Mitama. Iroha makes it a point that while she vividly remembers living in the same house as Ui, it was as though Ui herself had never existed. Mitama speculates that a Witch could have made Iroha forget Ui, but Momoko rebukes that she had never seen a Witch that would do that. Iroha can't remember anyone other than Ui, but promises to come back to Kamihama City to look for her. Mitama then suggests that Iroha's memory was false and that it was planted into her mind, but Iroha insists that she trusts her memory because of how much she loved Ui. She claims she can't see herself as "Iroha Tamaki" without Ui in her life. Mitama and Momoko accept Iroha's quest. Momoko promises to watch over it for Iroha, while Mitama suggests naming it, believing it would be sad for Iroha to just refer to it as "small Kyubey."
