Recap / Mad Men S 6 E 3 Collaborators

Go To

It's just filled with profanity, marijuana smoking and simulated sexual acts. Oh, and a few songs.

Pete and Trudy host a dinner party for their neighbors in Cos Cob. Pete flirts with his neighbor's wife, Brenda, and they meet for a tryst in his Manhattan apartment. Megan confides to Sylvia about her miscarriage and admits it to Don, prompting an awkward conversation over whether they want children.

At SCDP, Raymond, the Heinz Baked Beans representative, brings the Heinz Ketchup representative, an ambitious young man named Timmy, in for a meeting, but after Timmy leaves, Raymond makes it clear that he does not want SCDP to work with Heinz Ketchup, feeling overshadowed by the younger man whome he mentored. Nevertheless, SCDP decides to prepare a pitch for Heinz Ketchup. Stan lets the Heinz Ketchup news slip to Peggy, who shares it with Ted Chaough — who decides that CGC should try to pitch for Heinz Ketchup, making Peggy feel guilty.

Herb Rennet of Jaguar returns to the SCDP office, making Don and Joan uncomfortable. Brenda's husband finds out about her tryst with Pete, beats her up and dumps her on Pete's doorstep. Trudy, having thus discovered Pete's infidelity, kicks him out.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Response:
Pete:You're going to go to bed alone tonight and you're going to realize you don't know anything for sure.
    Trudy:I'll live with that.
  • Badass Boast: Trudy gives a big one to Pete when she kicks him out of their home:
Trudy: I refuse to be a failure. I don't care what you want anymore. This is how it's going to work. You will be here only when I tell you to be here. I'm drawing a 50 mile radius around this house and if you so much as open your fly to urinate, I will destroy you. . . . Do you understand?
  • Bad Boss: Peggy's copywriters definitely think of her this way. She's pointed out to be too harsh in her feedback, and that she terrifies her staff.
  • Benevolent Boss: In contrast, Peggy's relationship with her secretary, Phyllis, is a lot more open, with Phyllis able to point out the flaws in Peggy's management style.
  • Convenient Miscarriage: Zigzagged. Megan reveals to Sylvia that she got pregnant while she and Don were in Hawaii and miscarried. She relates that she wasn't sure if she was going to keep the baby because of her career, and was somewhat relieved when she ultimately miscarried. After, she started to feel guilt about feeling relieved.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After Herb visits her office, Joan immediately goes to Don's office to inform him that Herb's arrived and to get a drink for herself.
  • Oh, Crap!: Pete visibly gets this reaction when Brenda is dumped on the Campbells' home, after hearing her husband scream out, "Hey, Campbell, she's your problem now!"
  • Rage Breaking Point: Trudy hits hers some time after Brenda is dumped at her home. She chews out Pete the next morning about having his affair affect their home.
  • Riddle for the Ages: If the Heinz Baked Beans guy didn't want SCDP to work with Heinz Ketchup, why did he bring the Heinz Ketchup guy to the meeting in the first place?
  • Shout-Out: The quote at the top of the page is Pete's description of Hair.
  • Take That!: Joan to Herb, and boy does he deserve it:
Herb: I know there's a part of you that wants to see me.
Joan: I know there's a part of you that you haven't seen in years.
  • Tranquil Fury: Trudy is visibly enraged after driving Brenda to a hotel.
