Recap / Macgyver 2016 S 2 E 4 X Ray Penny

Go To

Mac: I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I need to go back into the room Murdoc planned to kill me in, and turn off all the lights.

Murdoc abducts Mac and holds him prisoner. After escaping, Mac leads Phoenix back to where he was held and figures out Murdoc's next target. But the assassin has one more trick up his sleeve...

Tropes:

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: After making a getaway through the storm drains while drugged, Mac is able to figure out where he was held by remembering various sounds he heard and using a formula to work out distances.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Murdoc unequivocally wins, his plan completely succeeding without a hitch. He really just played the team like fiddles. How this victory works out for him can be seen in a later episode.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Exhibited by Murdoc while keeping Mac prisoner, especially jarring after the neatness and efficiency with which he kidnapped him. Takes on a very different quality when you know he actually wants Mac to escape.
    • He cuffs Mac to the chair in a pretty insecure way, where he can easily reach his opposite wrists to pick the lock.
    • The IV needle supposedly used to keep Mac drugged and helpless makes a useful lockpick. As it was meant to.
    • After beating him up some, Murdoc leaves Mac alone for an extended period, ostensibly to fetch his torture tools to work Mac over properly. Because he couldn't have brought them in with him.
    • After Mac escapes into the storm drain, Murdoc mockingly calls after him, giving Mac the adrenaline boost to overcome the drugs.
    • He does a poor job of destroying the material detailing his next target, allowing Phoenix to track the man down and take him into custody.
  • Call-Back: Murdoc asks Riley and Matty how the are "'since I almost killed you - and everyone at your organization?'
  • The Chessmaster: Murdoc's whole purpose in abducting Mac was for him to escape, then retrace his steps to lead Phoenix to where he was being held. Once there, he finds a burned photo of Murdoc's next target and finds a way to examine it. The team locate the man to protect him, only to find he's also an assassin and arrest him, whereupon Murdoc's real plan is finally revealed as he "rescues" the man from their custody. The whole thing was a way of forcibly recruiting the man to an assassin organisation he plans to set up, and it worked perfectly.
  • Engineered Heroics: Murdoc's plan, from his target's point of view. Yes, he rescued him from Phoenix's custody, but Phoenix only found him because of Murdoc anyway.
  • He Knows Too Much: Murdoc uses a team of mercenaries to help him abduct Mac, then kills them once their part is over.
  • Kill and Replace: Apparently the fate of the real Murdoc.
    Sam: Murdoc.
Murdoc: The one and only. Except for that guy whose name really was Murdoc. I killed him so I could steal his identity... Anyhoo.
  • The Nicknamer: Jack refers to Murdoc as "Lord Nutbar."
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Murdoc beats Mac up some, but it's clear this is a warm-up act to the real torture. Or so Mac is meant to believe...
  • Rewatch Bonus: In addition to everything under Bond Villain Stupidity, Murdoc never said he was after his son's location. Mac said that, and then Murdoc leaned into it.
  • Shout-Out: Murdoc writes "Be Seeing You" on the wall for Mac to find.
