Art by Crash X Fusion: The trauma begins...
Luz and Amity make plans for their first tutoring session. While Luz learns something from Eda, Amity goes through a shocking experience.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Eda gives Luz one of these when telling her to tolerate Amity as her tutor.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: The chapter's opening statement features Hooty asking the author if he'll get his own chapter. He later calls himself the "greatest character in the story".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Luz single handedly takes on an entire gang of Hogwash students with no trouble at all.
  • Debut Queue: Lilith is introduced at the end of the chapter.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The mummy girl who mugs Amity is one of the top students of Glandus High, who aren't introduced as a concept until next season.
  • Flashback Cut: When Luz mentions Eda teaching her how to read, a flashback shows her learning her ABC's as a kid.
  • The Ghost: She's still mentioned but this is the first time since her debut that Boscha doesn't physically appear.
  • The Illegible: Turns out Luz has such terrible handwriting, she needs figurative and literal help in improving it. Just writing her name baffles Amity.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • It is here Amity realizes that Luz's "support stick" is just a bat for hitting.
    • It wasn't until here and now that Luz learns she has an aunt or that said aunt learns of her existence.
  • In Spite of a Nail: The breakout at the Conformatorium has occured exactly as it did in the show.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: During the mugging, the mummy girl steals one of Amity's boots. Her partner states she always does that, pointing out the fact that they're not even the same size.
  • Luminescent Blush:
    • Luz flushes in embarrassment when Eda pats her head.
    • Amity does this in reaction to Luz whispering in her ear.
  • Not Hyperbole: When Luz calls the Hogwash students buttfaces, one of them actually turns out to have a face shaped like a butt.
  • One-Woman Army: Again, Luz vs. a whole mob of Hogwash students: Luz wins on her own.
  • Sand In My Eyes: King claims he just has something in his eye and not because he wants to be part of the tender moment between Luz and Eda.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Spit Take: The second King mentions Eda's sister, Luz performs one.
  • Sticky Fingers: Eda taught Luz how to pickpocket, a trick she's mastered.
Luz: (holding Eda's wallet) Taught me too well.
  • Take That!:
    • Harry Potter gets one in the form of Hogwash.
Luz: Oh, I remember him, he was that obnoxious, high-class student thinking he's a chosen one just because he's got a horseshoe scar. Seriously, this is what happens when you pressure some poor kid with high expectations for your own needs. Not healthy that way.
    • One of the magic schools Luz lists is Spellman Academy.
    • The criminal known as Stary Watterfly was arrested for magical terrorism over "not getting a boyfriend".
  • Wham Episode: Amity is mugged by two criminals, which leaves her traumatized. Meanwhile Luz learns about Lilith, who is informed of the former's existence for the first time.
