Recap / Lucifer (2016) S05E10 "Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam"

Go To

Deciding to stay on Earth for a little while, God begins observing his children. He brings impromptu musical numbers to many people close to Lucifer, which irritates the latter as he helps Chloe, Dan, and Ella solve the murder of a football referee.

Tropes:

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: God trails Lucifer while he is working and plays the clueless parent card, making jabs at Lucifer within earshot of other people.
  • The Bus Came Back: Trixie returns since the events of "It Never Ends Well for the Chicken", being the singer of the sixth musical number, "Smile".
  • The Cover Changes the Meaning:
    • "Every Breath You Take", originally about the perspective of a Stalker with a Crush, is turned into a duet between an overbearing mother and Lucifer ranting about his manipulative father.
    • "Just the Two of Us", originally a romantic ballad, is here about Linda bonding with her baby. This isn't unprecedented as Amenadiel raps some of the lyrics from Will Smith's Parental Love Song version.
  • Fanservice: Lucifer sleeping naked and face-down on his couch gets a lingering wide shot to show off Tom Ellis' body.
  • The Ghost: Brilliantly averted. We're led to believe that Trixie is (yet again) this, as she is offscreen while Chloe bids her good night. Not only does she appear, she is the main singer of a number.
  • If I Had a Nickel...: God says this about evey time he's seen a naked body in Lucifer's penthouse.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Amenadiel telling Linda to her face that of course angels are better than humans. He grows out of it.
  • Internal Reveal: Dan learns how the Almighty Goddess previously inhabited Charlotte's body and there was "overlap" when he was dating her both times.
  • Musical Episode: The episode is one, with seven musical numbers being featured.
  • Musical World Hypothesis: The impromptu musicals are justified because it's God's powers causing them all.
  • My Beloved Smother: JJ's mother, who speaks in her son's name and interrupts him whenever he is about to talk. She also forced him to get the football scholarship, when what he wants is to become a chef.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Amenadiel is very uncomfortable with Dan trying to work out the exact timeline of his relationship with Charlotte and the Goddess.
Dan: Was the Goddess ever inhabiting Charlotte's body when I was....inhabiting Charlotte's body?
Amenadiel: See, I prefer not to talk about this, Dan, but I do believe there was some...overlap.
  • Psycho Ex-Girlfriend: Dan thinks God is this, upon realizing that he slept with his ex-wife.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Chloe gives one to God during their introduction, putting his treatment of Lucifer in relatively mundane terms to address how what he did to his rebellious son is awful. Lucifer is visibly impressed, though he cuts her off when she begins another one.
Chloe: Hi, God, I, well, I'm Chloe. I'm guessing you already know that, but here's something maybe you don't know, and respectfully, sir, you are a terrible father. I am sure you had your hands full with creating the Earth, you know, the Sun, the Universe, whatever, but I know what it's like to be a working parent, and my two cents, again, respectfully, when it comes to Lucifer, you screwed up. Big time. You know, when your kid acts up, and you kick them out of the house, and go radio silent for thousands of years? That's just mean. Respectfully.
  • The Reveal: God tearfully tells Lucifer that he is losing control of his powers.
  • Sleeps in the Nude: Lucifer does this while sleeping on the couch. When his father wakes him up in the morning, he scrambles for something to cover himself with.
  • Stealth Pun: "Every Breath You Take" is sung in the police station. Its creators? The Police.
