Recap / Lucifer (2016) S05E05 "Detective Amenadiel"

Go To

Amenadiel helps Chloe investigate the murder of a nun, joined by Lucifer and Dan. Meanwhile, Linda reveals a traumatic past to Maze.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: Maze calls Linda a coward for her reluctance to reconnect with her daughter. Linda responds by telling off Maze to stop treating her like Lilith and to just talk to her mother, leaving Maze speechless.
  • Berserk Button: Despite his issues with his father, badmouthing God and people's faith for him seem to be one for Amenadiel, as the killer finds out in the end.
  • Chick Magnet: The nuns in the convent all instantly hit on Amenadiel (one of them even flat out makes out with him when given the chance), much to Chloe's exasperation.
  • Compelling Voice: Amenadiel has gained an ability like this, similar to Lucifer and Michael's note . Apparently, it allows him to reflect the love the devout have for God back at them, causing them to be entranced by him and more susceptible to doing what he wants. Hence, it works on all the nuns at the convent, but not on Destiny Page, who is faking her turn to faith as a publicity stunt to promote her new album.
  • Deus ex Machina: A literal example. Amenadiel is able to return without another angel taking his place after the voice of God himself informs him that hell no longer needs a warden.
  • Genre Deconstruction: Lucifer having to pal around with Dan for much of the episode shows what a detective's job looks like in the real world: long and arduous hours of sorting through evidence.
  • Gilligan Cut: While asking Amenadiel to stay away, Chloe tells him that, for the time being, she wants to "avoid anything God-related". Cut to her new case in the convent.
    Chloe: Hilarious.
  • Internal Reveal: Chloe finds out that it was Amenadiel who blessed her mother to beget her. She's obviously not happy about it, though she doesn't take it as hard as he and Lucifer thought she would.
  • Killed Offscreen: Lilith died at some point between this episode and the last.
  • Parental Abandonment: When she was 17, Linda had a baby daughter whom she left at the hospital upon giving birth, because she was not ready to become a mother.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Maze really regrets not saying anything to Lilith before the latter died, hence why she urges Linda to reconnect with her daughter soon.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: Or rather, a kiss discretion shot. When Lucifer and Chloe start making out at the end of the episode, the camera tastefully pans up to the ceiling.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Amenadiel immediately flies to the convent after Chloe asks him for help. She lampshades this.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Linda's daughter, Adriana, shares her blonde hair and is similarly bespectacled.
  • Swapped Roles: Amenadiel takes Lucifer's place working with Chloe while Lucifer sticks with Dan on the "grunt work" at the office. Adding to the hilarity, Dan and Lucifer have developed a "bracelet bros" bond and Secret Handshake, similar to Dan and Amenadiel's Odd Friendship and bromance.
  • Taking the Veil: Ella admits that she considered becoming a nun when she was young.
  • Time-Shifted Actor: Lilith, who was played by Lesley-Ann Brandt in the previous episode, is now played by L. Scott Caldwell.
  • Title Drop: Upon finding out that Amenadiel is helping Chloe with her current case, Lucifer invokes the episodic Title Drop.
Lucifer: "Much as I appreciate you playing Detective Amenadiel, perhaps you should leave it to the professionals."
  • Was It All a Lie?: Not on Lucifer’s part, but Chloe worries that her own feelings for him are because she’s a “gift” to him, it isn’t until Amenadiel posits that the only thing being a “miracle child” did was make it so Lucifer couldn’t reflect her desires back at her and he chose to make himself vulnerable around her that she realizes her feelings for him are a choice.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Amenadiel theorizes that Lucifer's vulnerability around Chloe is not because she has any special powers, but because he lets himself be vulnerable around her.
