Recap / Lucifer (2016) S04E03 "O, Ye of Little Faith, Father"

Go To

Father Kinley attempts to turn Lucifer against Chloe. The murders of two people who were trying to turn their lives around strikes Dan a little too close for comfort. And Chloe is trying to get the Devil to change.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • All for Nothing:
    • Dan is upset that these former criminals turn their lives around only to die (or in this case, get murdered) so suddenly.
    • Oscar helped two former LosXs members clean up their lives, until they relapsed. So he killed them.
      • Unreliable Narrator: So he claims. The boss of one of the victims said that she had passed all her drug tests
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Lucifer's revenge tactics for someone betraying him includes punishment, fire, brimstone, and public humiliation via YouTube.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Kinley monologues to Lucifer about how he knows that the divine is real and so is the evil that walks the Earth, only to tell Lucifer that he is not it, much to the latter's surprise.
  • Batman Gambit: The events of the episode were all an elaborate scheme for Kinley to prove that Lucifer is truly the Devil. It fails when Lucifer doesn't reveal himself.
  • Central Theme: Betrayal. The killer is someone who betrayed two people, despite helping them get their lives back on track. The episode explores the ramifications of Chloe conspiring against her partner, and Kinley, the Big Bad of this arc, is eventually betrayed by his own co-worker after the truth about his crusade is revealed. On a more subtle note, Ella removing her cross could be considered a betrayal to God and her faith (though she herself felt betrayed by her faith in God who allowed Charlotte to be killed).
  • Cowboy Cop: Dan goes full Dirty Harry on the LosXs, storming their base and beating them up in order to get a confession out of them. He later admits to Maze that he enjoyed that and can't wait to do it again.
  • A Darker Me: Dan enjoyed acting like a Cowboy Cop so much that he says he's done being a Nice Guy, and will instead stick with being a darker Dan.
  • Downer Ending: Lucifer and Chloe seem to be on bad terms after the truth of her nearly betraying him is revealed and Lucifer getting confirmation that she was indeed scared of his real face and knowing Chloe won't accept what he really is. And to make matters more complicated, his first love Eve appears.
  • Driven to Suicide: Oscar when he fails in his mission.
  • Ethereal White Dress: Right after the conversation about the Devil's "first love", the scene cuts to a mysterious woman wearing a white dress and red heels walking in Lux and ordering an appletini. She's later revealed to be Eve, the First Woman, who came Back from the Dead to be with Lucifer.Furthermore...
  • First Love: Discussed. There's a prophecy about "evil" escaping Hell should The Devil find his first love. Father Kinley believes that Chloe is this for Lucifer, but Bishop Hoffman asks him what makes him think that Chloe is his first love.
Kinley: Of course she is! Who else is there?
[Cut to Eve at the Lux.]
  • Freak Out: Chloe admits that she lost it when she saw Lucifer's real face and realized that everything — Heaven, Hell, angels, demons, The Devil — is real. She ran away to Rome searching for answers.
  • Humans Through Alien Eyes: Maze has heard that "human spawn erupt from their mother's body in a ceremony of blood and pain." She's technically not wrong, but we prefer to not put it quite like that.
  • I Am What I Am: Lucifer tells Chloe as much, adding that he doesn't care what others think of him.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The killer does this to himself after failing to get Lucifer to show his Game Face.
  • Knight Templar: Kinley thinks orchestrating the deaths of two people (and a suicide) was worth it to make Lucifer show his true face.
  • Liar Revealed: Lucifer takes Father Kinley lying to him in stride. What really hurts him is finding out that Chloe has been lying to him since she returned from her "vacation".
  • Parting-Words Regret
  • Prophecy Twist: Kinley assumes that preventing Lucifer and Chloe from getting together will ruin the prophecy of the "Devil's first love." It never occurred to him that his first love might have been... the First Woman, Eve.
Hoffman: Let's say the prophecy is true, what makes you so sure that Chloe is even his first love?
  • Saying Too Much: The killer is close to having Lucifer punish him... until he uses Lucifer's name and "show us who you are." Lucifer realizes this is all a set-up.
  • Sinister Minister: Turns out that Father Kinley is on his own personal crusade against Lucifer, not acting under orders from the Vatican. When the truth comes out, he's arrested and excommunicated.
  • Warts and All: Discussed. Chloe wants to help Lucifer become a better person by encouraging him to be more altruistic. In turn, he asks her if she could accept him as he is and shows her his devil face once again.
Chloe: (shouting, in tears) I don't know!
Lucifer: Then I have my answer.
  • You're Insane!: Bishop Hoffman tells Father Kinley that he is a sick man. Kinley responds that the church will eventually see the truth.
Hoffman: I'll be praying for you.
