Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E21 "Anything Pierce Can Do, I Can Do Better"

Go To

A ballerina is found strangled with a dance shoe.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: When Marcus tries to recover Chloe with gifts, Lucifer tries to beat him by giving her the same gifts but in more luxurious versions; not only does it not work, but it makes things worse.
  • Call-Back: When discussing her breakup with Ella, Chloe confesses that it's not the first time a man's run out on her when things get serious, and it's getting hard not to wonder if she's the problem. She's presumably referring to that time Lucifer disappeared for weeks and returned with a stripper wife.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Linda has to use Lucifer's "what do you desire?" trick to convince him to tell Chloe how he really feels. Unfortunately, by the time he gets to her home, she has already accepted Pierce's marriage proposal.
  • Continuity Nod: Combined with Brick Joke. A "Glass Repairs" truck is parked outside Pierce's home, presumably to fix the window Lucifer broke the other day.
  • Domestic Abuse: It's not a stretch to interpret Pierce's behaviour towards Chloe in this episode (showering her with elaborate gifts and praise) as love bombing. Then he presents her with an ultimatum disguised as respecting her boundaries by telling her he'll back off entirely if she doesn't accept his proposal.
  • Double Take: Both Amenadiel and Charlotte's reaction when informed that Pierce is, in fact, the Sinnerman.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Charlotte has turned to alcohol in order to cope with the fact that, despite her best efforts, she hasn't changed at all.
    Amenadiel: [You're drinking] In a three-star hotel?
    Charlotte: It's what I deserve.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Marcus and Chloe get engaged after a very short relationship.
  • Frame-Up: It turns out this was going to be Pierce and Maze's plan. After Pierce became mortal, Maze would kill him and make it look like it was Lucifer and thus ruin his life on Earth. Maze is naturally annoyed that Pierce has suddenly decided he wants to go on living.
  • Gossipy Hens: Ella and Dan comment to each other about the Pierce-Chloe-Lucifer drama.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Ella quickly excuses herself from the murder scene when Lucifer brings up the subject of Pierce and Chloe breaking up. Dan does the same a few moments later, saying that "it's awkward".
  • Internal Reveal: Amenadiel nearly chokes on his drink when Lucifer reveals Pierce was behind the Sinnerman.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While she hardly knew the real story, Ella has to count for encouraging Pierce to go get Chloe back, thus ruining any chance for her and Lucifer.
    • Lucifer himself ended up screwing it up even worse than Ella. He set up this lovely little dinner for Chloe, then instead of confessing his feelings, he makes a dig at Pierce. It’s implied that if he had come right out and told her he loved her, she would have chosen him.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Under Lucifer's "deepest desire" trick, Miles reveals that his car accident didn't harm his leg at all. Rather, he saw it as a great way to enhance his career as a dance teacher by making it seem like he could have been a legend if not for this "accident." He thus goes around with a prosthetic over his real leg and a cane to cover how he's perfectly healthy, he just wasn't good enough to be a real dancer.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ella and Dan. Ella for Marcus, and Dan for Lucifer.
  • Slasher Smile: Lucifer sports a truly deranged one when he's telling Pierce that he wouldn't mind at all sending him on his way note .
  • Sunglasses at Night: Chloe does the 'sunglasses indoors to hide puffy eyes' variation.
