Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E06 "Vegas with Some Radish"

Go To

After a call from Candy, Lucifer heads to Vegas to check on her, aided by Ella.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Ageless Birthday Episode: Played straight. Chloe celebrates her birthday yet her age is never mentioned.
  • Breather Episode: While there is a still a Body of the Week, only Lucifer and Ella (who is a Denser and Wackier alternative to Chloe) are involved with the murder plot. The Sinnerman Story Arc goes completely unmentioned, the B-Plot focuses entirely on the human characters in their downtime getting up to sitcom-esque shenanigans, Amenadiel and Mazikeen (who are usually a source of Black Comedy, Cringe Comedy, or comedy retardant) are completely absent, and it ends on a heartwarming note between Chloe and Lucifer.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: Chloe briefly imitates Lucifer's RP accent after getting drunk on the booze in his penthouse.
  • Calculator Spelling: One of the codes Linda suggests for Lucifer's safe is 8-0-0-8 because it spells "boob" on an LCD screen and fits his sense of humor. Chloe tries it but it doesn't work.
  • Call-Back: Lucifer's birthday gift for Chloe turns out to be a necklace containing the bullet that she used to shoot him in "Manly Whatnots".
  • Didn't See That Coming: Dan's reaction when it is revealed that Ella, and not Lucifer, proposed the idea of a male stripper surprising Chloe during her birthday.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Chloe's shaky attempt at telling Linda that in no way she is disappointed at Lucifer's absence on her birthday. Obviously, Linda, an experienced psychologist, does not buy it.
  • Epic Fail: Chloe's, Linda's, and Dan's attempt at opening Lucifer's safe deposit box. None of them manage to do it, and Dan actually makes it worse when he accidentally damages the bedroom's Sumerian wall.
  • Foreshadowing: Ella says that she took up gambling to distract herself from "the voices". We'll eventually learn what she means by this in "Boo Normal".
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: In the flashbacks to how Lucifer and Candy met, we see that he ended up pouring his heart out about Chloe to Candy over wine and ice-cream.
  • Jumping Out of a Cake: Ella hires a stripper dressed as a cop to do this as a birthday present for Chloe. She seems to enjoy it more than the birthday girl does.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Chloe overhears Lucifer saying "don't you look ravishing?" from Linda's phone (he's commenting on Ella's beauty transformation). Linda assures her that he actually said "radish". It becomes a Running Gag for the rest of the episode.
  • Milholland Relationship Moment: Lucifer is more confused than angry when he sees Linda, Dan and Chloe sleeping in his penthouse after partying there without his permission. He even admits to what he thinks is a sleeping Chloe that she was probably annoyed he left without saying anything on her birthday and has every right to be so, before taking the opportunity to give her a birthday present.
  • Not Me This Time: Despite what everyone assumed when the male stripper popped out of the cake, this wasn't Lucifer's idea. It was Ella's.
Dan: Did not see that coming.
  • Not-So-Forgotten Birthday: While Lucifer does congratulate Chloe for her birthday at the start, he quickly leaves for Las Vegas to solve Candy's case, something that disappoints Chloe, since she wants him to spend time with her. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Lucifer was planning to give her birthday gift upon returning: a necklace containing the bullet that she used to shoot him back in Season 1.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Lucifer does not involve Chloe for the mission at Las Vegas because he refuses to be reminded that the last time he went there, he was recovering from the depression of discovering her true nature. However, Chloe takes it the wrong way and assumes that he isn't around on her birthday because he doesn't see her as a friend.
  • Number of the Beast: When Linda and Chloe are trying to guess the combination to Lucifer's safe, they naturally try out 666. It doesn't work, like most devil stereotypes Lucifer has never shown any particular fondness for that number.
  • Reveal Shot: While Chloe and Linda are discussing the possible passwords for Lucifer's safe deposit box, Dan chimes in out of nowhere, revealing that the two invited him to help them open the box.
  • "Risky Business" Dance: Chloe does this wearing one of Lucifer's shirts when she and Linda are getting drunk in his penthouse.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Candy Morningstar" as it brings back the character and elaborates on how Lucifer met her.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Ella looks stunning when she takes the time to dress up.
Lucifer: (impressed) Wow, don't you look ravishing?
  • Slumber Party: Chloe and Linda end up doing this at the Lux penthouse, joined by Dan later. To paraphrase them, the penthouse has a generous stock of alcohol and the best view of Los Angeles, it's a waste not to stick around. When Lucifer returns home at the end, he finds the three of them still in the penthouse, sleeping shamelessly.
  • Spit Take: When Lucifer proposes the fake marriage to Candy, she promptly spits at him.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Chloe continuously denies being disappointed by Lucifer not spending time with her on her birthday, when it is blatantly clear that she is.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: The place where Candy hides Lucifer's ring after stealing it.
