Recap / Lucifer (2016) S01E08 "Et Tu, Doctor?"

Go To

"... Et tu, Doctor?"

It's time for Lucifer's "re-birthday" party! Cue David Bowie music and a ridiculous amount of scantily-clad, acrobatic dancers. But Chloe (who's brought Dan) can't stay for the party; she's got work to do. Said work involves going to a different party, but hey. Malcolm doesn't seem to mind, even teasing them, and when his partner, Paolucci, jokes about Hell not being able to keep him? Well, you've got no idea.

Lucifer's displeased about something, but there's no time for that, there's a murder to investigate! Lucifer seduces a judge to get Dr. Martin on the case, and Chloe's surprised that he's deep enough to have a therapist. He's like an onion, you see. Along the way, Linda gets acquainted with Maze, and Lucifer figures out something about jealousy and learns about a certain Dr. Canaan.

And Malcolm turns up, telling Chloe that he thinks a cop shot him. Chloe, who's not exactly inclined to trust a guy who broke into her house, keeps her thoughts to herself.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Jonathan is hopelessly in love with Sandy, but she just loved her husband.
  • Asshole Victim: Paolucci, who had previously called Chloe "Palmetto bitch", is found dead from an apparent suicide.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Chloe and Dan have a very sweet one when they show signs of starting to reconcile.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Malcolm comes off as good-humored and affable, but he's not. Really, really not.
  • Blackmail: Malcolm to Dan, with a side of Shame If Something Happened.
  • Brutal Honesty: Lucifer twice informs Chloe that he's not actually listening to her.
  • Comforting the Widow: Jonathan hoped to do this to Sandy.
  • Dirty Cop: Malcolm and Dan - though Dan is this to a lesser extent, having only shot Malcolm to protect his wife.
  • Driven to Suicide: Richard is so depressed over his therapist's death that he nearly jumps off a building. Lucifer talks him out of it (without actually meaning to, but hey).
    • Paolucci appears to have been this, but Malcolm actually murdered him and faked a suicide note to make sure Dan doesn't get fingered as the man who shot him (which he did).
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Lucifer's reaction to figuring out that Mazikeen betrayed him to Amenadiel. He has a more playful version of this earlier, when Linda sides with Chloe over the way he's been acting.
  • Hidden Depths: The murdered therapist saw Richard for free, despite a death threat, and helped him get through many difficult events in his life.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Right when he is about to admit he's jealous of Dan and his relationship with Chloe he... doesn’t.
  • It's All About Me: Lucifer - which, oddly enough, helps him solve the case.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Lucifer. Jonathan murdered his co-worker due to jealousy over Sandy.
  • Man Bites Man: Well, man bites woman; Jonathan bites Chloe during a struggle.
Chloe: Did you seriously just bite me?
  • Nice Girl: Linda knows that sleeping with her patient is unethical, and decides to make her relationship with Lucifer a purely professional one.
  • Polyamory: What "cheater therapy" is actually about.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Sandy was accused of stalking Tiffany, the patient her husband was having an affair with. This eventually led to...
    • Toilet Humor: Sandy's friend owns a horse, and its manure was going to be thrown at Tiffany.
  • Wham Line:
Dan: How long did it take you to write that note?
    • Then immediately later.
Malcolm: That it was you who shot me.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Lucifer calls out Mazikeen for her selfish betrayal of him, telling her that they're done.
