Recap / Love Live Sunshine Ep 17 Dont Call Me Dia San

Go To

After receiving news of Aqours passing the qualifiers, Dia notices how Kanan and Mari had gotten closer to the rest of Aqours while she herself is still referred to with formality. Meanwhile, the club itself faces some financial troubles.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: The focus of the episode is about Dia's apparent distance to the rest of Aqours and her desire to be closer to them.
  • Affectionate Nickname: The dub uses this in place due to omitting Japanese Honorifics.
  • Broke Episode: Aqours spent most of their money for the school open house and the Love Live qualifiers in the previous episode. They spend most of the episode trying to earn money for future club activities.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Dia's issues would have been resolved if she just communicated her desire to be called "Dia-chan" to the second and first years.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": Barring Ruby, Kanan and Mari, the rest of Aqours refers to Dia as "Dia-san", the only one in Aqours referred to with the formal "-san" honorific. Dia concludes that her apparent distance to the group hinders the team going forward to Love Live and wants to be called "Dia-chan" instead.
  • Les Yay: The dub has more Les Yay moments due to the Affectionate Nicknames.
Chika: Wanna walk together? Let's go, sweetie!
Hanamaru: Here. These look good. Right, girlfriend?
You: Look at this pic from when we hung out the other day. Here, matey!
  • Memetic Mutation: A scene of the dolphin's head partially submerged behind Dia before diving back down as Dia turns her head around has instantly become a meme consisting of the dolphin mocking her.
  • Mythology Gag: The latter part of the episode is set at Izu-Mito Sea Paradise, the same aquarium featured in the "Koi ni Naritai AQUARIUM" PV. Like the PV, You is seen wearing the Uchicchi costume.
  • Out-of-Character Alert:
    • Chika notices Dia not being her usual strict self and asks Kanan if there's something wrong with her.
    • Later on, the first and second years realized that Dia is acting very weird and is making them worry. This prompts Kanan and Mari to reveal Dia's issue.
  • Unexpected Character: Despite being a Dia-centric episode, it is You who steps out of the bus during the ending credits.
  • Woolseyism: See the Affectionate Nickname entry.
