Recap / lonelygirl15 S01 "Moving In"

Go To

"Daniel's gone. He got really angry and just took off, because... somebody ransacked our room. I have no idea what they were looking for. You know, they took all of our money and... I mean, Daniel had a hundred dollars in his pocket, but... that's all that we have left."
Bree, "Ransacked!"
Dates Posted: (2006) November 23, 24, 26-30, December 1, 4-7, 9, 11

After celebrating Thanksgiving, Bree and Daniel are forced out of their room after it gets ransacked. With multiple people around them giving advice, they will have to decide who they can trust...

"Happy Thanksgiving": Jonas wishes Bree a happy Thanksgiving. He sympathizes with her not having her parents around, as he explains he's an orphan. He tells the story of how his parents went missing at sea. He advises Bree to make up with Daniel, and signs off with another wish for her to have a happy Thanksgiving.

"Thanksgiving": Bree thanks Jonas for reminding her that she should appreciate what Daniel's been doing for her. To that end, they've decided to go hiking, and she's going to make a Thanksgiving feast.

"Adventures In Babysitting": Bracketed by a green Watcher symbol, we see a first-person video of OpAphid ransacking Bree and Daniel's motel room. It ends with a piece of reversed audio.

"Ransacked!": The episode opens with Bree viewing the aftermath of OpAphid's raid. Bree says that the ransacker stole all of the money in the room, and they're down to the hundred dollars Daniel was carrying. They're going to leave the motel and start living out of Daniel's car again. Later, after Daniel leaves briefly, Bree records herself telling the fans that she's going to be in a live chat the next day.

"Scared To Go Home": Gemma stands in front of a brick column and a hedge, she explains she's scared to go back to her flat because she thinks she's being followed.

"Trust Issues": Jonas says he was in the chat with Bree the night before and he offered to let her live at his house. He says she was reluctant, and asks her to trust him, saying that she has to trust somebody. He talks about his own trust issues, brought on by him trying to be fiercely self-reliant. He explains how his experience learning to sail helped him overcome this and learn to place his trust in other people.

"Jonas?": Daniel says he distrusts Jonas, and thinks the story about his parents is made-up. He says Bree does trust Jonas and wants to go to his house. He complains about what being on the run with Bree has done to his life and says he's going to go home no matter what soon.

"Daniel Is Right": Gemma says she's back at her flat and expresses embarrassment at her own paranoia. She says Bree has no reason to trust Jonas and should listen to Daniel's idea to go home.

"Homeless": Bree and Daniel ditch the car, and fight with each other about their situation.

"Warwalking": Bree says that her and Daniel didn't go home after all, as she absolutely refused. She says she wants to go home, but is afraid the Order with track them down. The video cuts to the two of them walking, and Daniel explains that he's "warwalking". Bree gives a small tour into what homeless living looks like.

"The Anti-Cribs": Jonas gives Bree and Daniel a virtual tour of his house.

"Bad Decisions": Gemma asks Bree and Daniel why they haven't taken her advice and gone home. She expresses frustration at Bree ignoring her advice. She says she doesn't trust Jonas. She tells a story of a bad date she had over the weekend as a way of giving Bree advice about her situation.

"The Test": Daniel says that he agrees with Gemma, but that Bree won't go home. He decides to do a kind of test of Jonas - he will select one random forum member and have them decide whether they should trust Jonas, as their online fans are the only people Daniel trusts right now.

"Your Decision": Bree and Daniel are sitting in a parking garage, and Bree explains that if the fans trust Jonas, he'll show up outside, and if not, they're stuck being homeless. Jonas shows up, and Bree goes with him while Daniel leaves in a huff.

"Back Home": Daniel announces that he made it back to his parent's house. He talks about getting his life back into order by getting a job again and enrolling in college.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License: Jonas' story about his parents' disappearance in "Happy Thanksgiving" is loaded with this:
    • He says that his mom insisted that his dad buy a "Sat Nav" (satellite navigation) system, which is an odd term when it would normally be called GPS.
    • Jonas says that they went down while "sailing along the 140th longitude", which, as nautically-inclined fans noted, is not something anyone familiar with sailing would ever say.
    • He further says they sent a distress call to a Ranger station, when the Coast Guard would be a more logical choice. Furthermore, any Ranger station would be way out of radio range and would be redundant with the Coast Guard if range weren't an issue.
  • Broke Episode: Bree and Daniel are literally homeless from "Ransacked!" until "Your Decision", forced to live out of Daniel's car and later a warehouse. It takes a noticeable toll of their psyches and nearly tears them apart.
  • Call-Back: The title of "Your Decision" appears to be one to Gemma's earlier video "It's Not Your Decision".
  • Canon Welding: This arc began the fusion of OpAphid with lonelygirl15:
    • While previous OpAphid videos had referenced events in lonelygirl15, "Adventures In Babysitting" is the first time one of their characters has had a direct impact on the plot of the show.
    • Daniel's message from Tachyon in "Homeless" marks the first time a lonelygirl15 character has mentioned an OpAphid character.
  • Cat Scare: As revealed by "Daniel Is Right", the "Watcher" Gemma thought she saw in "Scared To Go Home" proved to be nothing.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Bree lost her room key sometime before "Thanksgiving", which would quickly prove to be a critical mistake, as it would allow Order agent OpAphid to ransack their room shortly thereafter.
  • Consulting Mr Puppet: Daniel complains in "Jonas?" that Bree would rather "talk to a puppet than her best friend".
  • Dumpster Dive: Bree says in "Warwalking" that she and Daniel have been doing this to get food.
  • I "Uh" You, Too: Daniel's memetic line in "Back Home":
Daniel: Bree, I still l... care about you.
  • Lost Aesop: In-Universe, it's not very clear what Bree and Daniel are supposed to get out of Gemma's story in "Bad Decisions", which she explicitly told to help them understand their situation better. She doesn't bother explaining how her story of watching her date have no problem getting hit on by a girl in the middle of his date with her relates to Bree and Daniel's situation of being homeless and having no idea who they can trust, either. There are fan theories, but nothing canonical.
  • Misplaced Vegetation: The bush behind Gemma in "Scared To Go Home" is more likely to be growing in California than London.
  • Parental Neglect: Daniel says his parents thought he was at his friend Paul's house and didn't even notice that he came home without the car.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Daniel refuses to trust Jonas even after he passes the test in "Your Decision", and ends up walking out on Bree.
  • Sdrawkcab Speech: As usual in OpAphid's videos, "Adventures In Babysitting" ends with this. Put forwards, the voice at the end says "Listen to your enemy, for God is talking."
  • Shout-Out:
    • Jonas jokes in "Happy Thanksgiving" that as orphans go, he's more "Bruce Wayne than Oliver."
    • The first line of "Adventures In Babysitting"'s description is "The Romeo + Juliet Ransack Edition".
    • In "Warwalking", Daniel references WarGames (though not by name) when explaining how warwalking got its name to Bree.
Daniel: It's from the word "wardialing".
Daniel: It's like that Matthew Broderick movie. With the killer computer? He just kept dialing random numbers 'til he found a live number. He hacked in: "Wardialing".
    • The title of "The Anti-Cribs" is obviously a reference to the old MTV series Cribs.
  • Sore Loser: Daniel in "Your Decision". Based on his reaction to Jonas passing a test that Daniel chose to set up in the first place, Daniel was clearly expecting him to get rejected, making his reaction this trope. Daniel gets pissy about Bree going along with the result, adamantly refuses to trust Jonas even though he passed the test, and ends up leaving Bree temporarily.
  • Thanksgiving Episode: "Happy Thanksgiving" and "Thanksgiving", appropriately enough. Oddly, while "Happy Thanksgiving" was the only one actually posted on the holiday, "Thanksgiving" is the one that shows it actually being celebrated, by Bree and Daniel having a "realistic Thanksgiving feast" with turkey jerky, potato chips, trail mix, and cranberry juice.

"And like I said, Bree, umm... Bree, I still l... care about you."
