Recap / lonelygirl15 S01 "Discoveries"

Go To

"I'm sure [Bree] just has a lot to think about. It's just frustrating, because this whole last week I'm trying to get her to decide whether she can trust me or not—you know and just... just when she decides to take a chance, turns out one of her oldest friends is a liar."
Jonas laying out the first discovery, "Tough Cookie"
Dates Posted: (2006) December 11-16, 18-21, 23, 25-28, 31

Even with Bree staying at Jonas' and Daniel back at his parent's house, their adventure isn't close to finish as both of them keep searching for answers to pressing questions, along with shocking revelations courtesy the mysterious Tachyon. All the answers they discover could lead to a lot of heartbreak however...

"Gemma? [Part I]": A montage of drop locations from the OpAphid ARG is shown. Someone hides behind a bush while filming Gemma walking down the street and up the steps to Lucy's apartment building.

"Gemma? [Part II]": A shot of Lucy's apartment building is shown, followed a short montage of stills from Gemma's videos. Someone discreetly films Gemma and Lucy getting into a car together outside of Lucy's building. As the car pulls away, the camera operator stands up and pans up to zoom in on a palm tree.

"Tough Cookie": Jonas talks about how depressed Bree's been since arriving; he thinks it's because Daniel didn't come with her. He says she barely even eats, but he managed to get her to eat some chocolate chip cookies for her from a local bakery. He talks about trust issues, and explains that they recently found out that Gemma works for the Order. He wonders about how big the situation really is, then appeals to Daniel.

"Gemma, Who Are You?": Daniel explains that he just saw Jonas' video, and talks about how he's been feeling since finding out that Gemma's an Order agent. He apologizes to Bree for leaving her, and says he's thinking about going back to Bree's house, wondering if they missed something the first time they left. He says he's going to figure it out and asks Bree to stay put until he gets in touch.

"Cheer Me Up": Bree says that she finally left her room and thanks Daniel for his apology. She acknowledges that it's not easy being her friend right now and asks Daniel to come to Jonas' house because he's the only one who can cheer her up.

"Back At Bree's": Daniel bikes to Bree's house and has a look around. He reminisces on what him and Bree used to do at the house, like watch movies. At the end, he says he found something but he's not sure what it is, so he'll do research and get back later.

"Gemma? [Part III]": Footage of the cameraman approaching a wrought-iron fence with brick pillars in front of a bush is intercut with stills from "Scared To Go Home", showing they are filmed in the same location. After the cameraman stops in front of the area, they pan up to show the palm trees in the distance. The video cuts to footage of Gemma talking on a payphone to someone.

"Bree Phone Home": Bree says she's glad to hear from Daniel because she's worried about him, and tells him he can still come over and live at Jonas' house. Bree says she's been doing research on tracking down all her relatives in an effort to try and find her parents.

"Undisclosed Location": Daniel explains that he's recording from an undisclosed location because he found a hidden camera in his bedroom. He beats himself up a bit over his poor decisions of late. He says he found a box with an odd symbol on it at Bree's house. He said he looked up the company and that they have warehouses in the area, so he's going to check one of them out. He ends by telling whoever placed the hidden camera that they have nothing.

"Skateboarding": Jonas says he was talking about how people get reported missing to try to distract Bree from the situation with her parents, but it didn't work. He says that his plan for this morning is to teach Bree about skateboarding.

"Breaking and Entering": Daniel says he's found out where the company's main warehouse is and he's going to break in. He takes a box of the medication from inside, then makes a quick getaway when he hears some sounds from outside. Back at home, he says the boxes are filled with a medicine called EPOGEN, then signs off.

"Mystery Movies": Bree says she agrees with Jonas that she needs a distraction from her parents, but that she was bored until she found Jonas' DVD collection. She talks about her childhood love of Nancy Drew books and spy movies and their secret messages.

"Christmas Surprise": Jonas throws a surprise Christmas party for Bree, giving her a box of National Geographic magazines, and the biggest surprise present: Daniel!

"Bree's Gone": Jonas talks a bit about his trust issues of the past, including some of his psychiatric advice and theories he's thought of. He says that despite this, he feels an instinct to help people he thinks seems nice. He talks how this has gotten him taken advantage of in the past. He says he's talking about all this because when he woke up, he found Bree was gone, along with one of his cars, one of his credit cards, and a bunch of money. Daniel arrives and takes over the video. He says Jonas is checking the rest of the house. Daniel says him and Jonas are going to check out Bree's last couple videos to see if they can find anything.

"Gemma? [Part IV]": The video opens with clips and voiceovers from a bunch of Gemma's videos, some of them spliced together. It cuts to someone going down an escalator and then apparently taking an elevator. It plays a spliced version of a Gemma video and an OpAphid video. It cuts to a view of the apartment lobby, then pans across the lobby. A message announces that "32/32 cameras are in place". Another pair of texts show up, reading "and now, we wait". A voicover from the OpAphid video plays again. We see someone ride up the escalator in first-person view, apparently leaving the building. The video smashes to black.

"Roadtrip": Jonas provides a voiceover as he films himself packing his suitcase. He says that him and Daniel worked on cracking the code of Bree and her dad, and Daniel discovered the solution, and the two of them are now going to the location it points toward.

"The Unthinkable Happened": Daniel and Jonas are on a stakeout, waiting for Bree and her dad to show up. From there, they follow them around until the Order shows up...

"Gemma? [Part V]": Shots of different objects appear onscreen. From there, it intercuts between shots of Gemma traveling through an alley (marked with the cameras they're being shot from) and a screen that's black apart from a lit area with an X and a nearby text that says "Targeting". Eventually, the "Targeting" locks onto Gemma and is replaced with "Press Any Key To Fire". It cuts to a shot looking down the alley toward a bright light that expands and wipes out the picture with a white glare.

Tropes:

  • Alternate Reality Game: "Bree Phone Home" spawned a short ARG-style puzzle involving the number Bree called to talk to her great-uncle Franklin. When called, it gave a message that contained a hidden code for a second phone number. This second number yielded a message from Bree's dad. This would be followed up later in "Mystery Movies", where she used an acronym to let him know that she had gotten the message and would "C U SOON".
  • Belated Love Epiphany: Well, Belated Friendship Epiphany anyway. In "Cheer Me Up", Bree says that she wasn't treating Daniel the way he deserved to be treated, but after he left her, she fell into a depressed funk for five days and still wants him to return to cheer her up.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Gemma, as revealed by the phone call in "Gemma? [Part III]", where she "jokes" about killing one of her old friends (Bree) because she's getting annoyed with her. And of course she's been lying to her the entire time.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Tachyon borrows OpAphid's "Oh dear" for the description of "Gemma? [Part III]".
  • Brick Joke: The "Press Any Key To Fire" from "Gemma? [Part V]" references a gag from the OpAphid ARG where Brother apparently thought that "press any key" meant he had to press the Any key.
  • But Wait, There's More!: The title card that ends "Gemma? [Part II]" has this exact phrase on it (minus the exclamation point, anyway).
  • Call-Back:
    • In "Tough Cookie", Jonas mentions Bree loving chocolate-chip cookies, in a reference to "Bree The Cookie Monster".
    • In "Christmas Surprise", Jonas asks Bree if she's going to make any more "Proving Science Wrong" videos using the magazines he got her.
    • "Gemma? [Part IV]" is riddled with them, showing many clips from Gemma's videos and the previous parts of "Gemma?", as well as audio clips from a couple of OpAphid's videos ("Home Alone", "Which Side Are You On?", "Adventures in Babysitting").
    • A couple from "Gemma? [Part V]":
      • The first three seconds of the video come from "Add Poe Hinder Vilification", the fourth video of the OpAphid ARG and the first posted by Op agent War Pylol. It shows War tracking down Brother's car to alert the Order to his location.
      • The description: "Sometimes, running into an ex can be REALLY awkward!" This refers to Gemma exposing Brother's cover identity to OpAphid while feigning friendship and even romantic interest toward him.
  • The Conspiracy: Daniel laments that "[t]hese people are everywhere" in "Gemma, Who Are You?" after he learns that she's working for the Order.
  • Consulting Mr Puppet: Gemma is annoyed at Bree over this in "Gemma? [Part III]":
Gemma: I swear that girl only takes advice from her stuffed animals.
  • Covers Always Lie: The thumbnail of "The Unthinkable Happened" is actually taken from "My Difficult Decision". Lampshaded by Daniel in the description, where he says he did it to get people to watch.
  • Christmas Episode: "Christmas Surprise" was posted on Christmas day and centers around Bree celebrating Christmas for the first time. It also marks Daniel and Bree coming back together for the first time in sixteen days.
  • Deadpan Snarker: The description of "Gemma? [Part II]" oozes this:
"The weather in London sure does look nice for December, doesn't it?"
  • Fade to White:
    • After Bree, Daniel, and Jonas escape after Bree's dad gets killed by the Order in "The Unthinkable Happened", the video fades to a white screen.
    • "Gemma? [Part V]" ends with this, right at the moment that Gemma is killed by Brother.
  • Foreshadowing: One of the OpAphid audio clips in "Gemma? [Part IV]" seems to come from the then-unreleased "The Ends Justify The Means".
  • Fun with Acronyms:
    • Gemma's question in "Gemma? [Part III]" ("Are you sure the D in APHID isn't an option?") refers to the insider meaning of the APHID acronym, where the D refers to Destroy. For the curious...
    • The list of movies Bree rattles off in "Mystery Movies" consists of Citizen Kane, Usual Suspects, Sneakers, Out of Sight, Ocean's Eleven, and Never Say Never Again. Taking the first letter of each title spells "C U SOON" or "See You Soon".
  • Gilligan Cut: This sequence in "Skateboarding":
Bree: At least I'll have a soft landing. If I fall.
Jonas: Ummm, yeah. When— when you fall. (Bree looks at the camera doubtfully)
(cut to Bree sitting on the cushions, having clearly just fallen)
  • Heartbeat Soundtrack: An increasingly-loud heartbeat during "Gemma? [Part V]" is heard as soon as the first shot of Gemma occurs.
  • Heroic BSoD: Bree's refusal to leave her room for a few days was an offscreen example, as Bree was still trying to process everything that had happened over the previous month.
Bree: It's just that... so much has happened in such a short period of time that... I kinda shut down.
  • Info Dump:
    • Bree gives a short one directed to Daniel at the end of "Skateboarding", full of information about her dad.
    • A short example in "Roadtrip", where Daniel explains (nearly) the entire solution to the ARG-style puzzle carried across "Bree Phone Home" and "Mystery Movies".note
  • Internal Reveal: While followers of the OpAphid ARG already knew about the camera in Daniel's bedroom thanks to "Home Alone", Daniel (and most of the lonelygirl15 fandom) only finds out with "Undisclosed Location".
  • It's a Long Story: Bree gives this line to one of her relatives in "Bree Phone Home" to avoid having to explain exactly why she hasn't been home in a while.
  • Killed Offscreen: Gemma, killed by Brother at the "Gemma? [Part V]" after it fades to white.
  • Misplaced Vegetation: Silently parodied in "Gemma? [Part III]" where Tachyon pans up to some palm trees after reaching the location of a video allegedly shot in London.
  • The Mole: Gemma works for the Order and doesn't even live in Britain.
  • Mood Dissonance: An excellent example with the description of "Gemma? [Part V]" ("Sometimes, running into an ex can be REALLY awkward!") as compared to the video, a tense piece with no sound except for a heartbeat, where Gemma is killed off at the end. It works because, knowing the backstory of Gemma and Brother, you know that Brother is relishing being able to make her pay for her betrayal.
  • Myopic Architecture: The warehouse in "Breaking And Entering" has an interior gate in its parking lot that is presumably securely locked... which is irrelevant, as there's a gap in the fence next to it large enough for a person to squeeze through.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Jonas believes this to be the case in "Bree's Gone", as he thinks Bree took advantage of his generosity for the opportunity to rob him.
  • Not Used to Freedom / Quicksand Box: Bree says in "Mystery Movies" that living at Jonas' house without the rules and restrictions of her old life has mostly left her very bored.
Bree: ...to be honest, there's absolutely nothing to do.
  • Prisons Are Gymnasiums: Alluded to by Jonas in "Tough Cookie" when he jokingly wonders if Bree will come out her room "all ripped from push-ups and sit-ups".
  • Public Secret Message: Bree uses the list of movies she watched in "Mystery Movies" to tell her dad that she got the secret message clued back in "Bree Phone Home".
  • Questioning Title?: Daniel's "Gemma, Who Are You?" The "Gemma?" series as well, although those questions pretty much answer themselves.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Jonas in "Tough Cookie" compares the idea of Bree coming out her room jacked to Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2.
    • The title of "Bree Phone Home", to the line "E.T. phone home" from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
    • Bree mentions in "Mystery Movies" that she used to like reading Nancy Drew books that her dad got for her. Additionally, there's the list of movies she rattles off as part of her secret message.
    • Jonas says that his "flux capacitor ran out of uranium at about four" while they were working.
  • The Shut-In: In "Tough Cookie", Jonas says that Bree has become this since her arrival three days earlier, never leaving her room out of apparent depression at Daniel being gone.
  • Sinister Surveillance:
    • The hidden camera Daniel found in his bedroom right before "Undisclosed Location" was placed there by OpAphid, as seen in "Home Alone".
    • Tachyon uses a heroic version of this in Gemma's apartment building in "Gemma? [Part IV]", setting up 32 cameras inside.
  • Sneaky Departure: Bree leaves alone in the night between "Christmas Surprise" and "Bree's Gone" and takes a bunch of Jonas' stuff, leaving Jonas and Daniel to try to figure out why.
  • The Stakeout: Two of them during "The Unthinkable Happened". Daniel and Jonas start out staking out the cafe where Bree and her dad are meeting, then later they stake out Bree's dad's car in the parking garage.
  • Swiss-Cheese Security: "Breaking And Entering": Considering this is a warehouse filled with presumably expensive pharmaceutical drugs, it sure is not guarded well. After he clears the outer fence, the only resistance Daniel encounters is a single car he manages to evade. The interior gate is presumably locked... a fact that's irrelevant when Daniel just slips through a gap in the fence next to it. Inside the building, there are apparently no security cameras or locked doors anywhere. The only hint of any security is the bizarre screeching sound near the end, but we never see the source of it before cutting to Daniel safe at his hideout.
  • Title Card: Tachyon uses several of these across the "Gemma?" series.
  • Trespassing Hero: Once again, Daniel breaks into a building to help figure out what the Order is up to in the appropriately-titled "Breaking And Entering".
  • We Wait:
    • One of Tachyon's title cards in "Gemma? [Part IV]" reads "and now, we wait". Although she immediately joked about subverting it by just pulling the fire alarm now (the description indicates she did not do this, and instead set a timer for the fire alarm to go off at some point).
    • What Daniel and Jonas have to do for a second time in "The Unthinkable Happened" at the parking garage. Lampshaded.
Daniel: Now we just gotta wait.
      Jonas: Wait?
      Daniel: Yeah.
  • Wham Episode:
    • "Gemma? [Part I]" and "Gemma? [Part II]" reveals that Gemma has not only been lying about her location, but is also working with Lucy and by extension the Order of Denderah.
    • "Bree's Gone", "Roadtrip", and "The Unthinkable Happened": Bree goes missing, Jonas and Daniel work out that she's met up with her dad, and then Bree does meet up with her dad... and then they get tracked down by the Order and her dad gets murdered in front of her.

The past few days have been so horrible....
