Recap / Little Princess S 2 E 32 Can I Have It Back Now Please

Go To

One day, the Princess is preparing a box. The narrator asks what she's doing, and she replies that her cousin is coming to visit and the Queen told her to do something to make him feel at "home". She reveals that she's giving him the box with Gilbert inside. When the guests arrive, the cousin likes Gilbert, who he calls "num num", which is also the name he gives his blankie. The adults are very proud of the Princess for being kind.

Outside, the narrator praises the Princess for giving Gilbert away, but then the Princess reveals that she only intended to lend Gilbert to her cousin. The narrator points out that she accidentally said she'd give him away, so she runs into the hallway to get Gilbert back.

However, the King and Maid tell her she can't change her mind. The Princess tries to claim that Gilbert is too big for her cousin, seeing as he's only a baby, but the King tells her that she's had Gilbert ever since she was a baby. The Princess's aunt then gives Scruff a toy mouse and Puss a bow.

Princess mopes in the garden while her cousin plays with Gilbert nearby and the General approaches, confused by the baby playing with Gilbert. She explains the situation, and the General suggests doing a swap. The Princess tries the swap with her potty, her crown, one of the Admiral's toy boats, and the Prime Minister's tricycle, but the first two he isn't interested in, and the last two get claimed by their owners. Meanwhile, Puss is trying out some bartering of his own, trying to get Scruff's toy mouse.

At lunch, the Princess sulks because her cousin is getting mashed potato all over Gilbert and the adults think it's cute. She walks into her room, chanting, "Not fair!" the way she did a few episodes ago. Then, she sits on her bed and cries. However, she perks up when her aunt and the Maid put the baby down for a nap. She sneaks into the King and Queen's room where he's sleeping and tries to swap Gilbert for a toy elephant, but the Maid comes in and catches her. When the auntie and cousin leave, she gives the Princess the cousin's blanket, but it smells bad.

That night, the Princess has insomnia despite her trying a hot water bottle, the blanket, and heated milk. Then, someone calls out, "Yoo-hoo!". It turns out to be the aunt, who has brought the cousin over because he can't sleep either. So, the two cousins swap "num-nums" and the pets swap toys, resulting in a happy ending all around.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: The Princess's aunt gives Puss a bow, which she puts on his head, but he hates it. This is Truth in Television because, while Puss has occasionally put on clothes, real cats tend to hate being put in them.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Not really, but when the baby cousin calls Gilbert "num-num", the Princess says, "Gilbert!", or, "No, his name is Gilbert", as though he thinks "Num-Num" is the bear's name. In actuality, though, it seems to be a word he made up for "thing I like".
  • Affectionate Nickname: The Maid calls the Princess's baby cousin "Little Pookie Pumpuss".
  • Age-Appropriate Angst: The Princess crying and brooding over parting with her teddy bear is typical for a four-year-old.
  • Baby Talk: The baby calls things he likes, "num nums". Justified as he's a literal baby.
  • Big "NO!": When the Princess realises that she made a slip of the tongue and accidentally said she was giving Gilbert away instead of lending him, she yells, "Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!".
  • Buffy Speak: When the Princess tries to trade Gilbert for her crown, she calls it a "shiny, crowny num-num". Then, she uses the adjective "boaty" to describe the Admiral's toy boat.
  • Go-to-Sleep Ending: The episode ends with the Princess going to bed.
  • Heavy Sleeper: The Princess's baby cousin is this apparently, because her aunt says, "Nothing wakes him up."
  • I Was Told There Would Be Cake: The Princess is given two cupcakes from the Chef as a reward for her generosity.
  • Poor Communication Kills: If only the Princess had told the adults that she only intended to lend Gilbert, there would've been no plot.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Inverted. The Princess's aunt gives Puss a pink bow, and he's a tomcat.
  • Toilet Humour: One of the items the Princess tries to barter with the baby is her potty.
  • Too Unhappy to Be Hungry: At the lunch table, the Princess is too grumpy to eat and leaves the table early.
  • Warm Milk Helps You Sleep: The Princess tries drinking hot milk to get to sleep, but it doesn't work.
