Tropes present in this episode:

  • Bedsheet Ghost: Nellie and Willie try to scary Laura and Carl by having Willie dressed with a white bedsheet after learning the truth about how they came to think that their father beheaded their mother.
  • Gainax Ending: Laura and her friend run away laughing once it's made clear that it was all a mistake and there was no murder or ghosts involved— then the Headless Horseman shows up from the dark and scares them off. It's never explained whether that was actually a ghost, an hallucination or somebody pulling a Halloween prank.
  • Halloween Episode: The first in the series. Although there was "Haunted House" in the previous season, this is the first one to occur during the holiday.
  • Mistaken for Murderer: Laura thinks she saw Mr. Oleson behead his wife, and gets even more convinced when Mrs. Oleson is nowhere to be seen. In fact, it was a mannequin sitting in a chair and Mrs. Oleson was out to visit her mother (which was what they were arguing about before Laura saw Nels cutt of the mannequin's head and thought it was the outcome of their fight).
  • Off with Her Head!: Laura thinks she witnesses Mr. Oleson murdering his wife by severing her head with an antique sword.
  • Scary Teeth: Laura has a dream where Nels has large, yellow teeth and a hideous face while presenting his wife's head in a tray.
  • Shout-Out:
    • One of Laura's nightmares involve a monstrous-looking Nels serving Harriet's head on a tray. His Nightmare Face is based on the 1925 version of the Phantom of the Opera.
    • When Laura and Carl are at the Mercantile by night, Laura asks him to hold her hand, and then questions why he hasn't already, then Carl answers that he's already holding her hand, or rather, some hand, which turns out to be the mannequin but they think it's Mrs. Oleson's corpse. This based on a sequence from The Haunting (1963).
