  • Gilligan Cut: Immediately after Harriet hopes that Nancy will be good as gold while she's gone, we see Nancy getting into a fight with Cassandra over a baseball.
  • Grew a Spine: Cassandra seems to have grown out of the Shrinking Violet she was portrayed as after losing her parents, as she stands up to Nancy when she tries to bully her into giving her a baseball without asking, and later when she catches her stealing her brother's homework.
  • Lazy Bum: Nancy lets her mother do her homework for her, and is nervous when Mrs. Oleson has travel for a week because she knows her father and brother won't do the same. When he fails to do one thing (getting a white leaf in the middle of the river, which winds up getting wet and won't be useful for her project), she immediatly scolds him, ignoring his efforts to please her.
  • Weight Woe: Elmer starts paying attention to his weight when his classmates keep teasing him too many times.
