  • Alas, Poor Villain: After Tim gets desperate enough to try an armed bank robbery, which ends with him and the bank teller pointing their guns at each other, Jonatha tries to talk him out of shooting, only for him to be shot dead when the teller's gun goes off. Nobody is happy for the young man's death, and his father, who initially covered his son's actions but had previously disowned him for them, is devastated by his loss.
  • Irrational Hatred: When they arrive in Sleepy Eye, Mary and Adam visit the Garveys and, after they leave, Andy admits to resenting them because his mother died while trying to save their baby. He knows it's irrational, but can't help feeling it, and Jonathan reassures him what happened was nobody's fault.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After Jonathan foils Tim's plans once too often, Tim and his gang send Jonathan a message by beating up his son Andy.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Tim's gang are willing to steal merchandise by night and even beat up a young boy just to send his father a message, but draw the line at his idea to try and rob the bank with a gun, due to finding it too risky.
